Maybe you shouldn't have asked....
What could go wrong?
FIFYToo true.
Lin coming up should have been a lock. ?
How well does this team do without him in the lineup or even in the clubhouse? I fear his absence could really take some of the wind out of their sails, especially in the thick of a pennant race against a team that got much better at the deadline (at least on paper).Annnd back to the DL. Abraham tweeted he told him he hopes to be back but surgery is likely needed.
He was absent from the lineup for 7 of the 8 games (on the DL for 6 of them) in their recent winning streak. Nunez is a more than adequate replacement at the plate and no one is going to replicate what Pedroia brings defensively. As for his presence in the clubhouse, if he's not opting for surgery, he's going to be there every day.How well does this team do without him in the lineup or even in the clubhouse? I can see him retiring in a couple years, and i hope he would at some point if it comes down to it, but if he doesn't the team may not have a choice. Either way I don't see him finishing out the contract. Are you suggesting he would retire or that they'd cut him?
They have plenty of choice. The money is spent either way. He was a 5.7 bWAR player last year. Even if he misses some time he only needs to produce about 7 wins to cover the $56M left over those 4 years.I can see him retiring in a couple years, and i hope he would at some point if it comes down to it, but if he doesn't the team may not have a choice. His defense is his main source of value at this time, and if his knees are shot, it could be very hard for him to continue to add that value for another 4 years. But somehow with his issues this year, his defense has still been excellent, so who knows what happens with him. But he doesn't really have the option of moving to DH, he's just not a good enough hitter to do that at this point in his career, and we know he isn't going to be playing first either. They have plenty of choice. It's knee, singular, and there's no evidence yet that it is "shot". He had surgery on it last October then it got plowed by Machado in April. The issues he's having now are no doubt related to those things and playing through them. Surgery again, which Pedroia suggests is likely, may be enough to get it right so he'll be fine for the rest of his career (barring another traumatic injury to it).His defense is his main source of value at this time, and if his knees are shot, it could be very hard for him to continue to add that value for another 4 years. I don't have a link, I think it might be the espn article, but DD was quoted as calling it his "bad knee" and will likely be an issue for the rest of his career. Knees are funny, I've had many skiing friends blow out their knees, but it is generally on something minor like hitting a mogul wrong, not eating it down a double black. So while he might get back "healthy," his risk for random DL trips over nothing much will probably be an issue the rest of his careerIt's knee, singular, and there's no evidence yet that it is "shot". Nunez playing every day would leave us pretty thin on depth; if he's done for the year we might need a RHH bench bat as Moreland/Devers insurance. He was absent from the lineup for 7 of the 8 games (on the DL for 6 of them) in their recent winning streak. Obviously, you'd rather have a healthy Pedroia in the lineup, but it's not as though his being on the DL is going to cause some sort of catastrophic failure for the rest of the team.
The Sox have that guy in Chris Young. But they need another infielder who can cover 1B/3B defense so that Young can bat for Moreland against a tough LHRP in the late innings.Nunez playing every day would leave us pretty thin on depth; if he's done for the year we might need a RHH bench bat as Moreland/Devers insurance.
I would rather have Lin if starting some games was at stake. However, as a defensive specialist Marrero can play good D late in the game and anywhere on the infield dirt, and I think that's what the Sox need. You beat me to it about Lin. First time up in the majors and he played quite well. One thing the Sox do seem to have an abundance of is credible infielders. Lin should be up before Marrero.
Huh? Last year he was worth 4.4 oWAR and 1.7 dWAR per bref. The year previous he had a 0.0 dWAR in 93 games. Obviously, dWAR is a bit wonky and unstable looking at single seasons, but suggesting he's done as a hitter is a bit ridiculous as is suggesting that he can't accrue 7 WAR over 4 seasons, so he should be cut.His defense is his main source of value at this time, and if his knees are shot, it could be very hard for him to continue to add that value for another 4 years. Well Nunez was presumably acquired as Moreland/Devers insurance and if he's permanently at 2B, that isn't available anymore. They have Young yes, but using him in this application ostensibly makes him a backup infielder. I still think they need a RHH bench bat for the postseason if Pedroia is done for 2017. Could that be Brentz? Possibly. The Sox have that guy in Chris Young. But they need another infielder who can cover 1B/3B defense so that Young can bat for Moreland against a tough LHRP in the late innings.
They have that guy, too, in Deven Marrero, but Farrell would have to somehow manage with a pen only having six RHP options, for him to be called up.
Fangraphs had him worth 45.6 runs from 2014 to now, and about 14.6 runs on offense. I'm not saying he is done as a hitter, he still has significant value as a hitter as a 2B. But he is not a good enough hitter to be a DH if his knee injury keeps him from playing the field. That is a pretty high bar. I don't think they should cut him, and never said that they should. But if his leg injuries keep him from fielding, there isn't really a spot for him, and he may be retiring from the game before the contract is done. I don't know what percentage chance there is of that, and I certainly hope it doesn't happen because I like the little bastard, but it certainly is a possibility.Huh? While I agree, Lin has been looking like the old Lin in AAA.I hope Lin is the next guy up over Marrero if needed.
Depends on how little cartilage he has left. If it gets to bone on bone it requires external lubrication like Sabathia and occasional draining of the knee. Red Sox don't provide much information beyond pain-knee or pain- elbow.I think Pedroia has a mildly arthritic knee that's going to flare up on him to some degree probably every year moving forward. There's no easy surgical fix for a guy his age, it's not like he's going to have a knee replacement
