I really was hoping that someone else would start the thread this season, but it wasn't to be. We had some quality action in this thread last season, helped by the addition of our Geordie friends I think. They're gone along with a well deserving Brighton squad and a fairy tale Huddersfield story. We welcome Hull, Middlesbrough, and (finally) Sunderland from the promised land, while we welcome back Sheffield United, Bolton, and Millwall, who replace Rotherham, Wigan, and Blackburn.

There are 30 British top flight titles, 33 FA trophies, and 19 League Cups between the teams, with 12 stadiums with capacities over 30K. We've got a bunch of quality derbies (Steel City Derby for the first time since Wednesday smashed the pigs in 2012), quality managers, a variety of playing styles, and a bunch of owners who are willing to spend the cash. 46 brutal games from Sunderland to Cardiff and from Ipswich to Bolton. This league is awesome and I hate it so fucking much.

There's a lot to cover and go over (and we have a lot of time), but I thought I'd start with this great piece on Sunderland's downfall. Well worth the read.

@americantrotter @Investor 11 @Mr Poon 14 @thehitcat @Stanley Steamer @markinlondon @Smiling Joe Hesketh and a few others I'm sure I've forgotten- Good luck.

Turns out Millwall fans are good for something: The Lion of London.

“Like an idiot,” he told the newspaper, “I shouted back at them. I thought, ‘I need to take the p*** out of these b******s’.”

“I took a few steps towards them and said, ‘F*** you, I’m Millwall’. So they started attacking me.”
My favorite part of the read?

“I didn’t think of my safety at the time,” he added. “I’d had four or five pints — nothing major.
Or maybe the part where they interview his mother:

Phyllis Larner, 78, told The Sun: “He’s fearless, my son. He’ll give as good as he gets.

“He’s quite nippy and lippy and wouldn’t back down from a fight.
Edit: Despite the quote I did not link to the Sun. I'm not an animal.

Justin you do a great job covering the second tier stuff with first tier enthusiasm mate. I didnt watch too many EPL games last year, i watched more SPL games. And i caught a few championship games, partly cos i wanted to see the Owls go up.

My wife pointed me to that Millwall story last night. Every time I think of it I can't help from chuckling. What a fucking animal.

I just said this in V&N, but they ought to name a stand after this guy at the Den. (I'm half serious). At the very least, I'm sure the club will do something.

Gives me another excuse to post a picture of this amazing piece of graffiti from a Crystal Palace pub:

BeIn out, ESPN in for the coming season.

beIN SPORTS will not broadcast the 2017/18 Championship season, and has subsequently removed all of the opening EFL Championship weekend matches from their schedule.

According to an ESPN spokesperson, “Beginning August 4, as part of a separate agreement ESPN reached with BAMTech, ESPN will have live and replay coverage of weekly matches from the EFL. Currently, the plan is for the matches to be carried on ESPN3.”

That's awesome. The Championship is the bomb.

Wasn't Wigan playing for the FA Cup a couple of years ago? That's brutal.

Great news for the Championship, given the fraction of viewers who have BeIn vs those who have ESPN.

But even more than that, great for MLBAM (sorry, the NHL bought a stake... uh, "BAMtech"). MLBAM is second only to the porn industry when it comes to advancing the technology used to bring video to you over the internet. They're the reason streaming doesn't suck. They taught Netflix a thing or two, and as most here know, kept baseball like a decade ahead of other sports technologically (can you believe GameDay was launched in 2001?). You couldn't ask for a better tech partner to carry your brand.

Holy shit. A real network behind the championship. We'll probably get better coverage than the brits.

Love my manager, lots of comings and goings. No idea what to expect. Just happy to be in a decent league again.

Oh and our away jerseys are purple. No idea why we've tried it a few times but it's my favorite color so roll on the season.

Thanks to your friend and mine, Roberto Martinez!

Among Wigan's starting XI in the FA Cup final were future Everton luminaries Joel Robles, Arouna Koné, and Antolin fucking Alcaraz.

That off-season was the rare time when corresponding managerial moves sunk the mid-term fortunes of three different squads: Man United got Moyes, Everton got Martinez, and Wigan got Owen Coyle who didn't even make it to Christmas.

Nice to see I can continue my morbidly fascinated checking-in on "we're fucking shit" Sunderland.

It's a nasty habit I picked up from the Yedlin loan and I just can't seem to shake.

I can't say I'm all that interested in watching second division soccer considering all the great inventory Americans can access, but it does include EFL Cup matches which can be interesting. Since those are mostly weeknight games in England, I'd often DVR them, so I'd prefer Bein over ESPN3 in that respect. (Not sure how good ESPN3 is for replays.) Otherwise, I guess the differences between linear and online television are shrinking, especially for a niche product such as Championship matches.

They've been my English team since 2005 when they came for their preseason tour to Vancouver (BC), Seattle and Portland. I had such a great time hanging out with their fans that had traveled here, that I went there in the spring of 2006 for a few matches. They were crap then, and are crap now, but they are my team.

I want to have a soft spot for them and kinda do, at least for the fans, but the actual club and players and executives seem so consistently and thoroughly appalling, like in a 1970s/1980s Yankees way but with even more fascism.

Arguably it will now be easier to watch English second-division games - particularly on replay/on-demand - than English first-division games. If you're the EFL negotiators on this, you're taking the rest of the week month off.

Whoa, just saw this news. Pretty bad timing for NBC to introduce a pay option for those smaller clubs in the EPL.

What rights does ESPN carry now: domestic cups? 2nd through 4th divisions in EFL plus EFL Cup

ESPN doesn't have much these days, compared to years past.

TV:
USMNT (split with Fox)
MLS
US Open Cup
UEFA World Cup qualifiers (split with Fox)
apparently Fox has sublicensed some Champions League games this season?

Streaming:
Championship/League One/League Two
EFL Cup
NASL
USL
DFB Pokal
Copa del Rey final
A-League

ah, forgot about Euros and Euros Qualifying too.

Not to derail this thread, but it will be nice to be able to keep tabs on who may promote to EPL by season's end. I am stoked!

I've been so lax on this thread this year that it's devolved into a discussion of streaming v televised footy viewing.

You know what? I needed a goddamn summer off from Wednesday. Two straight years of 9 months of roller coaster ending with me trying not to projectile vomit rage and confusion and fucking sorrow out of my gut. All while a fan base that has always been supportive and resilient and hilariously self deprecating in that special Yorkshire way gets swallowed by that same negative emotion and turns on itself, the coach, and the players.

I spent the offseason quietly singing the songs and feeling the pure love that I somehow have for this strange club that I have no reason for deep emotional connection. And now that's its starting again I'm just angry.

I'm angry at so many Wednesday fans for being overly negative and reactionary. I'm angry at pundits for mindlessly blowing Fulham despite the fact that they ship goals and couldn't score when someone shut down shop on them. I'm pissed I have to deal with the fucking Pigs and their absurd and delusional fans. I'm mad that no one fucking respects this league even though it is amongst the most interesting, entertaining, and challenging leagues in the world. I'm angry at parachute payments and FFP and entitled moaners from more fortunate clubs who don't get what this shit is about. And maybe, just maybe, I'm most angry at myself for opening my fucking heart up again for another trip on this roller coaster of human excrement.

I may have some time today to throw a little season preview together. If not, in a few days.

Sunderland/Derby kicking off on ESPN3 before what is hopefully just a late arriving crowd.

Stirring Bradley Lowery tribute to start.

That's at best debatable, and the matches are not on at the same time. Championship matches take place while Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, and Serie A games are on. The Championship may be barely better than MLS, but it's a far behind those products.

Sunderland fans are not supporting the team now? I think Sunderland needs the fans.

I never realized that Jon Champion spend most weekends shuttling between EPL and Championship (per WorldSoccerTalk).

80min and a strange lack of substitutions for an increasingly gassed Sunderland team.

They've looked like a potentially solid Championship team though, if James Vaughn is less of a dud than he looks so far.

Yeah, DH, I think I understand. Wednesday has come really close the past two years, but there's no telling if they will challenge again, or slip back into oblivion. The odds in this nut punch of a league favor the latter.
Anyway, I'll look forward to your preview if/when your anger abates. Usually, it's good stuff.
I'm cautiously optimistic for Leeds this season. They made good progress last year, though unfortunately Garry Monk walked out on them (for Middlesborough? Seriously?) But they've kept most of their players, added several potentially decent ones, and their inexperienced manager is saying the right things. Their new owner is as well. He has made it his goal to get LUFC promoted within 5 years, and has managed to buy back Elland Road for the club. And, to top it off, we're undefeated, baby!! Who else in this league will be able to beat Bolton away?
So it begins.

1. Cardiff
2. Wolves
3. Forest
4. Ipswich
5. Hull
6. QPR

Just how everyone drew it up.

Edit: and @Stanley Steamer - you know how I feel about Leeds, but congrats on the Elland Road (re)purchase. That's a really big deal and a good sign that things are pointed in the right direction.

Has anyone had a chance to see Cardiff this year? As near as I can tell, no one rated them that highly coming into the season. They lost to Burton midweek in the League Cup, but 15 points from 5 and a +8 goal differential in the Championship is an impressive start for anyone. So is it a soft schedule? Random variance of a SSS? Are they actually good?

On Wednesday September 4th, 1867, the members of the Wednesday Cricket Club (so called because they played on Wednesdays) met at the Adelphi Hotel in Sheffield, Yorkshire and formed The Wednesday Football Club.

By the 1880s, The Wednesday had become the dominant local side and began playing other teams in competitions such as the FA cup. Overcoming the typical transitional speedbumps, The Wednesday became a fully professional club in 1887. Having their application denied by the newly formed Midlands based Football League, they became co-founders and the initial champions of the Football Alliance. The Football Alliance included, amongst others still playing, Nottingham Forest, Stoke, and Newton Heath. After the Football Alliance was dissolved, The Wednesday joined the First Division of the Football League and had moderate success, winning the FA Cup in 1896, defeating Wolverhampton 2-1. In 1899, The Wednesday moved into their current stadium, Hillsborough, a beautiful and iconic park that has hosted many important matches including Euro and World Cup games, as well as the site of one of the worst tragedies in sports history in 1989.

The first decade of the 2oth century was a good one for The Wednesday, winning back to back League titles in 02-03 and 03-04, as well as their second FA Cup in 1907. While the next few decades were not as fruitful, they had a period of great success in the 20s and 30s, winning the league back to back again in 1928-29 and 29-30, as well as the FA Cup in 1935. Also of note during this period was the official name change of the team to the Sheffield Wednesday Football Club in 1929. The name had been used informally as far back as the 1890s.

While the team was a yo-yo club in the 1950s, they had a resurgence in the 60s, finishing second in the top flight in 1960-61 to the famed Double side of Tottenham and losing the famed 1966 FA Cup final to Everton. The next decades saw the club plummet to their lowest depths, nearly being relegated to the 4th division in 1976. The one great moment that occurred during this time was the famed Boxing Day Massacre in 1979, when Wednesday and United set a third division record with over 49,000 spectators on hand to watch Wednesday’s 4-0 demolition of the Blades.

Under Howard Wilkinson, The Owls made it back to the top flight by 1984 where they would remain for all but one of the next 16 seasons. They finished 5th in 1986, but English Clubs were under ban from European competition at the time. After Wilkinson left, former Man U leader Ron Atkinson took over, and while they were relegated in his first season, they came back up the following season, which included Wednesday becoming the last club not in the first division to win a cup, winning the 1991 League cup 1-0 over Manchester United. The resurgence continued as Wednesday finished third in 92 and finished runner up in both the League Cup and FA Cup in 1993, with both losses to Arsenal. This was when I started following the team and it’s kind of been downhill since then.

The late 1990s saw financial and football mismanagement leading to the team’s relegation on the final day of 2000 and the club continued to drop all the way to the third division. The one highlight of this period saw 42,000 Owls fans travel to Caridff to watch Wednesday defeat Hartlepool in the 2006 playoffs. Wednesday quickly dropped back down from the Championship and was mired in League One, twice staving off winding up orders before being purchased by Milan Madaric in 2010. The clubs fortunes began to improve and they returned to the Championship by going undefeated in their last 13 games on 2012 to pass United on the way to a second place finish. Mandaric soon sold the team to Thai businessman Dejphon Chansisri, who began to invest in the club, witnessing a loss to Hull in the playoff final in 2015 and a 4th place finish in 2016.

Sheffield Wednesday are the 3rd oldest British Professional Club (behind Notts County and Stoke City) and have won 5 League titles, 3 FA Cups, and a League Cup. They are 14th in the all-time top flight table and only this year have been bumped out of the all-time Premier League table top 20, despite only playing 8 years.

Wednesday are a proud old British Football Club with a passionate and loyal fan base that rivals any in England. It’s an honor that this somehow became my club, and a pleasure to watch them play after 150 years. Here’s to greater success and a return to the top flight where they belong. Cheers.

So, I've only seen them play a full game once, and I thought Wednesday controlled the game over all (dominated the first half), until Cardiff answered with a 95th minute goal. This article reads like Soviet Propaganda, but discusses how XG loves Cardiff this year. I think XG is good stuff, especially in large sample sizes, but it's not the end all, be all. Honestly, I wasn't overly impressed, but perhaps I saw them on a bad day (or a good day for Wednesday).

I'm rooting for Bristol City to get promoted only because they are the only team near the top that hasn't been in the top division in the Premier League era. If they make it, thy'll be the 50th different team to play in the Premier League.

Sucks watching a Wednesday team without the injured Hooper/Fletcher/Forestieri/Bannan/Lee/Boyd/Hutchinson/Hunt/Lees/Van Aken/Westwood. Probably 8-9 players of what would be their best XI.
