Mid season top 50 prospects update from BP. Devers up to #5 and Groome at #43.

"Why He Might Fail: He’s only pitched slightly more pro innings than you have." Nice.

I haven't seen Devers knocked as having an aggressive approach. Is that really a concern with him? The K/BB numbers aren't fantastic, but they don't seem to scream that, either. If anything, I've read more on his approach being on the patient side and a relative positive. Anybody have more on that?

I have trouble taking that whole article seriously to be honest. For some reason they moved Albies down from 11th to 40th when he is raking in AAA and probably called up very soon . The writer doesn't seem as informed as other prospect guys.

He hasn't always walked as much as you might expect from a guy with his power (only 4.7% in 2015, but he's up to 9.3% this year) but he also doesn't strike out a ton so it's not something I think is all that worrying.

ASB for AA and I suspect Devers will move up when it is done.
Peralta has shown nothing in AAA, hopefully he gets cut to make room.

Interesting - Devers playing left field in the futures game.
Turns out it wasn't Devers, for some reason they had two guys with the same number on the roster. Victor Robles was out there.

And Mauricio Dubon lined a double into the RF corner. I'm sure P91 will be crowing over that one for awhile.

Is there a live box score for the Futures Game anywhere online? I'm watching on TV but can't find a box score anywhere.

Pedro Castellanos is off to a good start in the GCL. 50 PA, .348/.380/.437 with 2bb/3k and a HR. He hit .326/.394/.496 in the DSL last year. He has no position and at 19 isn't that young for the league but the guy can rake. Worth keeping an eye on.

Trey Ball is off to a terrible start. 0.0ip, 5h, 4er, 1bb. He just recorded his first out as I posted this. A strike out.

edit: 1.0ip, 9h, 8r, 7er, 1bb, 2k. 46 pitches, 25 strikes.

Dedgar Jimenez continues his impressive season. 6ip, 2h, 1bb/5k and may go out for the 7th for the 3rd straight game.

Bryan Mata went 5ip, 2h, 2bb/4k. 81 pitches, 47 strikes. Minus that one clunker, the guy has been a machine.

Castillo is 2/4 with his 10th HR of the year in 278 PA. From 2014-2016, he hit 12 in 868 PA.
What are the odds he replaces Chris Young as the platoon OF bat next year now that they won't be trying to get under the luxury tax threshold?

Brentz would probably make more internal sense given the 11 million price difference and his turn around this year, but I don't think either is likely.

I think it would go to Lin or Brentz. Next time Castillo is called up, I think his contract is on the book for good.

They won't be? Did I miss something?
I was operating under the assumption that after resetting their penalty this year they'll care less about staying under again next year if it makes the team better. I could be wrong and they will still care about staying under the cap.

He had a play where he had to charge and barehand grab-throw in one motion like that in the game I went to in Hartford. I'm not sure what parts of his defense still need work, but he has that move down.

Henry Owens 4ip, 6h, 6er, 6bb, 2k.
Chavis is currently 1/2 with a HR.
Shawaryn 5.0ip, 4h, 2er, 1bb/9k, 2HRA.
Brentz with his 19th HR after cooling off for a week.
Aneury Tavarez is currently 2/4 with a triple and a HR and has at least 2 hits in each of his last 5 games. He hit well in AA last year, hit better this year and then got injured early on.

Looks like Jaime Callahan may have figured something out in AAA. Over his last 7 games: 11ip, 6h, 3er 3bb/16k
Chandler Shepherd's last 12 games: 21ip, 21, 5er, 5bb/25k
If you take out Jerez's 1.1ip, 7h, 8er performance earlier in the year, his season line is at 45.0ip, 38h, 10er, 41k/13bb, 2.00 era, 1.15 WHIP

Over his last 13 starts, Dedgar Jimenez: 2.02 era, 75.2ip, 67h, 17er, 15bb/68k,1 HRA. .240/.289/.308 on a .314 BAbip. For the season, he has given up 3 or fewer runs in 14 of his 17 starts. He has 5 starts with 0er, 5 with 1, 2 with 2, 1 with 3. Still just 21 and in Salem. Surprised he and AAA Jalen Beeks don't get more press around here. Especially Jalen.

And Pedro Castellanos is up to 48 PA without a strikeout. For the year he has 3bb/3k in 61 PA. Crazy.

Devers just went deep to left-center on a curveball away. The wind was blowing in. Just ... immense all-fields power for a 20-year-old.
20 HRs for the year. I'm on the fence between calling him up and letting him get some AAA experience. His glove isn't there but the big club really needs some power.

Between Devers, Chavis, Ockimey, Castellanos, and Baldwin, there is a lot of (potential) HR power down on the farm.
