Justin Verlander retired 10 batters today (none by K) while allowing 9 hits and 3 walks to the Indians... charged with 7 runs after both inherited runners he left behind scored on a three run homer -- Jose Ramirez's 2nd homer of the game. At least one of the runners should have been retired on what turned out to be a delayed double-steal when Edwin Encarnacion missed a stop sign. The Indians are in line for an easy win despite Mike Clevinger walking 5 through his first 3 innings.

This snapped Verlander's streak of 331 consecutive starts with a strikeout, which was tied with Curt Schilling for the 6th longest streak since 1913.

Mike Fiers must have caught Drew Pomeranz Disorder.

4 IP
2 H
0 R
105 pitches

That's 18 batters faced at an absurd 5.8 P/PA - the equivalent of going to a full count for every single batter in the starting lineup...TWICE.

O'stown going down in Milwaukee.
Milwaukee batting, up 7-1. Arcia on first. Batter hits a butcher boy grounder to SS and beats the throw to first. Arcia makes 2nd base and keeps on toward third as it is uncovered for the moment. He over slides third base and gets up and heads for home (if he went back he would have been tagged by Machado). Arcia gets in a rundown then just sprints for home. The throw back home is caught by the SS but he is blocked off from tagging Arcia at the plate by the catcher (who had ran back down from thridbase). No error. Fielder's choice. 6-3-5-1-5-6. At one point Showalter came on the field. The Brewer announcer speculated "old school" Buck was yelling at his team.

Also, Travis Shaw took a pitch in the hand or wrist and left the game as a precaution.

Justin Bour is great TV. Funny, smart, self-effacing. I'm a new fan.

You might want to temper that a bit through the trading deadline, I think he might be Cashman's main target.

Arcia was way out of the baseline a long time during the run-down between third and home. I dislike Showalter as much as anyone, and am rooting for the Brewers b/c of Shaw, but is that routinely allowed? The Milwaukee radio guys thought BS was on the field to argue that Arcia hadn't touched third base.

For sure, but I thought that the fact that he was being pursued by a guy/guys trying to put a tag on him made a difference, but apparently, that's not the case.
The "baseline" is defined by the runner as a straight line from wherever he is to the next/previous base at the time that someone attempts to tag him, to avoid the tag. Until that point he can run anywhere. (which is why runners are never in the baseline going from home to 2nd when they hit routine doubles, for example). Arcia seemed to run pretty straight, don't think there was any reason to call him out for running out of the baseline to avoid a tag.

My young cousin, Sean Newcomb, makes his 5th ML start today for the Braves. Lack of run support has killed him, but he has pitched fantastic. Here's to another great outing

I hate Shoewalter as much as the next guy, but besides running out of the baseline, I thought the third base coach might have unintentionally interferred with the play..
Didn't look like there was any contact with the third base coach but it was very close. The fact that the coach and the ump were right in the middle of the players makes the play even more bonkers and chaotic.

I think it's becoming more likely that showalter is fired this season

Jon Jay, the outfielder, pitched a scoreless top of the ninth for Maddon and the Cubs in an 11-2 Milwaukee leading game. The Cubs crowd and players really seemed to enjoy it.

California. Duh.
Arizona brings Rodney in to protect a 4-1 lead against LA. 2 hits and 4 walks later, the game is tied, the bases are loaded, and there's still nobody out. Chris Taylor hits the first pitch from TJ McFarland over the left fielder's head, and the Dodgers finish off the sweep.

3 straight walks on 13 pitches (one strike to the middle hitter Bellinger). Impressive.

Wtf happened in Washington? 2 hr rain delay, no rain?
Overreaction to the forecast, but, in their defense, it rained pretty hard over much of the DC area between 7:00 and 9:00, just not right at the ballpark.

Was he not out of the baseline between 2nd and 3rd? He looked far out.
I don't see that at all. No more out of baseline than guy that hits one up the gap and goes wide rounding first.

Also, unless he's doing it to directly avoid tag (yes, all runners are always trying to avoid tags, but you know what I mean) then it's nothing anyway.

Pittsburgh just scored 10 runs in the top of the first at Wrigley against Jon Lester, who got 2 outs, allowed six hits, walked three, two errors behind him led to 6 unearned runs. Frankie Cervelli's grand slam kayoed Lester.

I just put the game on the TV, because it's on TBS. I saw the 10-0 score, top of the 2nd, and had to check the play by play. That's an awesome first inning.

Dodgers trailed 4-3 heading into the 9th in Miami. Puig hits a 2 out 3 run homer and the Dodgers continue their amazing hot streak.

Cubs led the Orioles 8-0 through the Top of the 3rd. Orioles battled back to cut the deficit to 8-6. Trumbo takes Koji deep in the Bottom of the 8th to tie the game at 8.

Edit: Buck pulls Britton after a 12 pitch scoreless 8th Inning. 2nd batter to face Brach goes deep in the 9th, 5th homer of the game for the Cubs and they are back on top 9-8 with All Star Game loser Wade Davis coming on to pitch the Bottom of the 9th.

Just let the Dodgers and Astros start playing now, first to 50 wins is this year's champions, and everyone else can keep playing for third place on down.

The Nationals appear to have started up after the break right where they left off in the first half. In their first two games back, their starters have an ERA of 0.00. Their bullpen has an ERA of 14.72. Last night, they almost blew a 10-0 lead.

Yasiel Puig proves yet again that he has no respect for the game. He must be the worst teammate. I hope he charges the mound one of these days and his team stays in the dugout.
