deep inside Guido territory
The Yankees announced devastating news regarding their top prospect, Gleyber Torres, as the highly touted young infielder has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament and will require Tommy John surgery. Torres will miss the remainder of the 2017 season, though the Yankees note that they expect him to be ready for Spring Training 2018. (Recovery from Tommy John is typically shorter for position players than it is for pitchers.)

He probably wasn't really ready anyway defensively to help this year, but still a major bummer.

Also it's in his non-throwing arm, so that is good news going forward.

Not here
I'm conflicted.

On the one hand, he could be a phenomenal player and phenomenal players are fun to watch.

On the other hand, fuck the Yankees.

I don't like feeling conflicted. It feels like I'm slipping into some kind of demon hellscape where the Yankees aren't the embodiment of every evil humans have wrought on this planet.

There's a support group for shit like this, right?

I know, I've been finding myself not hating the Yankees as much as I know I should. It might have something to do with the inoffensive, humble posters in the Yankee forum. They should probably be booted.
If the feeling doesn't pass, I'm going to ask my doctor for ECT.

The Red Sox took Trey Ball 25 picks before Judge. I'm sure Yankee fans enjoy that nugget. I'll continue to enjoy hearing about setbacks regarding their young players.

We're humble because we know the Yankees are at least one year, probably two, from being ready to win a championship. With that in mind, the Torres injury is not a big deal. In fact, it buys time. Yanks need a plan for Castro and Torres. Who plays second and who plays third? Next spring training will be the proving ground.

The interesting thing about this now is, maybe we get to see Wade or Andujar get a shot this year.
Andujar got moved up to AAA today because of this, he just turned 22 in March and was leading the Eastern League in RBIs at 52. Defensively, he has only played 3B as opposed to Torres (a SS who started playing 3B and 2B this season) and Wade (a Brock Holt type who has played six positions this year, all but 1B/C/P). His defensive reputation is that he has the skills necessary including a very strong arm but needs to be more consistent.

In the end, they will probably stick with Headley for the rest of this season, as it doesn't really make sense to give up assets for a stopgap when you are paying Headley through 2018 anyway.

Cashman also said today in the wake of this that Headley was their guy for now, and if something happened to him, Torreyes would get the first shot, with Wade coming up in Torreyes' role (but presumably playing more, I'd guess 3-4 games a week at different positions).
