Today NY announced that they plan to have Gleyber Torres on an 8 game rotation in AA, 3 games at SS, 2 games at 3B, 2 games at 2B, and one day off. Presumably this means if he hits and fields well, he will be the replacement next time any of Headley/Didi/Castro get hurt.

Seemingly awful news for NY's top pitching prospect, second year in a row he's had issues:

"Yankees say James Kaprielian was placed on the minor league DL with right elbow pain. He will undergo an MRI and a dye contrast MRI."

Clint Frazier apparently asked the Yankees to un-retire No. 7 so he could wear it

This seems to not actually have happened, and was made up or misunderstood by dingbat Suzyn Waldman.

From Keith Law's chat today:

Dana: Suzyn Waldman is the latest media member to take a shot at Clint Frazier. Are there character issues with Frazier or is this just a guy who rubs some people the wrong way because he dares to have fun playing baseball?
Keith Law: Apparently she made the whole story up, for which she should be suspended. I wouldn’t say much for her bona fides as a journalist, but she is a member of the press, and fabrication is a cardinal sin.

Chance Adams picked up where he left off last year in today's AA opener, he didn't give up a hit before leaving with two outs in the sixth because he'd hit his pitch count, 5.2 0 0 0 4 5.

Both Scranton and Trenton have doubleheaders today because of rainouts. Miguel Andujar had a bases-loaded triple, two HRs and a single in the opener, and a RBI double in the 1st of the nightcap, 5-6 and counting today. Dustin Fowler went 0-4 in the opener but has 2 HRs and 5 RBis halfway through the second game.

Also Blake Rutherford has three doubles today in low A, 8-15 (.533) so far this season. Really excited to see him climb the ranks...

Fake news is becoming the norm in 2017. I'm not talking about Trump, just news stories in general. There are retractions daily now, (like the girl who lived with monkeys just yesterday). What ever happened to verifying with 2 sources like they did in the old days?

Jorge Mateo making his first career start in CF tonight, since he has Didi and Torres and maybe Wade ahead of him in the middle infield. He's been leading off in Tampa, .294 with 4 SBs (0 CS) so far.

The tests came back for Kaprielian, and Cashman makes it sound like he will need Tommy John, but they are letting him make that decision for himself, which he will do in the next few days.

Even with NY's great prospect depth, that is a big blow, he was their top pitching prospect and I think had a real chance of being in the 2018 rotation.

Tyler Wade with 4 hits tonight, he is hitting .550 early on (11 for 20).

Albert Abreu, the 21 year old RH SP they got from Houston for McCann, had a career high in Ks tonight with 11, a very nice 5.2 2 0 0 0 11 outing in low A.

Sucks for Kaprielian -- when drafted in 2015, there was some chatter in prospect circles he could make the major leaguers by end of season.

Now he won't be back to pitching in class A until middle of next year, so 2019 seems like the earliest he'd make it to NY.

This is also my concern with conservative treatment for elbows when 22-25. I get wanting to be conservative and not treating elbow surgery as a 100% success rate, but this guy probably could have gone under the knife last spring (when he first strained his elbow) and would be getting ready to pitch again this year. Now he's set back a couple years. Nowadays, I assume elbows at 22-25 have the same mileage arms in 1985 had at 32-35 because of all the innings these guys toss as kids and in college.

Have to admit have never heard of him but jeez is he jacked for a pitcher. Wonder if his workout routine contributed at all to the elbow issues. You don't get lats like that from throwing a baseball.

Yeah, he had a big velocity jump after he was drafted, so you certainly might be onto something there.

Mateo with three more SBs today and he scored both runs in a 2-1 win, he has 9 SBs in 8 games. He had a funny tweet the other day, about Billy Hamilton's minor league SB record of 155 (!!!):

Albert Abreu, one of NY's top pitching prospects who they got in the Brian McCann deal, got promoted from Charleston to high A Tampa today after three dominant starts.

Chase Adams and Justus Sheffield are both going great in AA, combined lines:

Adams (4 starts): 22 13 4 2 10 22, 0.82 ERA.
Sheffield (3 starts): 17.1 11 4 3 10 16, 1.56 ERA.

Also Ben Badler reported tonight that Miguel Andujar was taking grounders at 1B before tonight's game. He has only played 3B in games, but his D there is sometimes sketchy, and 1B is a weak position in terms of depth in the NY system. With Headley going good in the bigs, Torres a possibility at 3B and Machado's availability after 2018, plus Bird's bad slump to start this year, worth keeping an eye on this.

Gleyber is having quite the night in his second game back from injury, 3-4 with a double, HR, SB and 4 RBIs.

Dustin Fowler heating up, today he had a crazy 5-6 game, hitting for the cycle (2 doubles) and the HR was a walkoff in the 11th.

If there's an injury and he keeps crushing, certainly a good chance. If there's no injury, hard to bench any of Castro/Didi/Headley unless one slows down a lot.

NY's current AA rotation consists of two of their top pitching prospects (Adams, Sheffield) and three other guys all already on the 40 man roster (Herrera, German, Ramirez), so it's not a huge surprise but still nice to see that those five collectively have a 1.95 ERA in 20 starts.

Where is Abreu pitching? I heard he got roughed up a bit the other day.
He got promoted from low A to high A after 3 great starts, had one great start in high A, one bad one, and went on the DL right after that (just a few days ago), no details seem to have emerged yet as to why but I believe it's minor.

Frazier and Fowler both heating up in AAA and putting pressure on Gardner/Ellsbury from below. This is a pretty interesting post from the RAB comments just now, Frazier has a much higher OPS on the road than at home in Scranton:

============================================

Scranton, and the international league in general, is not very power friendly.

2015 Greg Bird ISO: .199
2016 Gary Sanchez ISO: .187
2016 Aaron Judge ISO: .219
2017 Clint Frazier ISO: .236

He's also younger than any of those guys were when they posted those numbers. If you aren't excited about the tools on this kid, get excited.

Fowler and Frazier continue to both hit and pull their numbers up, now at .887 and .849 OPS respectively. For a change, here's a great pic of an extra base saving hit Fowler made in CF last night:

Well, if you assume RF belongs to Judge, NY has Ellsbury/Gardner/Hicks, then Fowler/Frazier, and Blake Rutherford lurking in the low minors. I think Gardner is still probably the first to go, but Frazier could certainly be a prime chip trading for someone like Gerritt Cole. I'd feel better about moving him if Rutherford was hitting better (.716 OPS in 97 ABs, 0 HRs), hopefully he will pick it up soon.

Ronald Herrera was hurt to start the season, but he has been back now for two starts in AA, both scoreless. He is already on the 40 man, and Cessa/Mitchell/Green are all ahead of him for emergency rotation duty, but we could see him in the Bronx sometime this season.

Jorge Mateo with what must be the best game of his career thus far, 4-5 currently with his first two HRs of the year, a double and a single.

Adams is pitching now, not Monday. Several hits and walks, which was usually his main weakness, but no runs through 3.

He didn't get announced as starting until today when Green got called up, and in the first inning, he got the first two guys, then gave up a single and two walks before getting the third out. Since then he's really settled down, only two more runners allowed and he's in the 5th now, still scoreless, 6 Ks in 4.1 IPs, up to 88 pitches so this might be his last inning.

5 2 0 0 3 6, 97 pitches for Adams in his AAA debut. I'm guessing that might be it for him.

Torres homered in his first AB today. Can't wait for him to get to NY.
First AB of the second game of a doubleheader, just to nitpick.

Blake Rutherford with his first HR of the year also today, nice to see him heating up.

Dustin Fowler with three more hits tonight so far against Pawtucket, including his 7th triple, which I'm pretty sure is the most of anyone in the majors or minors.

That game is still going, 4-4 in the 12th now, Wade and Fowler at the top of the lineup between them are 6-9 with 3 walks, including a double/triple/HR, plus each has a SB. In the 9th, Scranton was down to their last out, Wade on first and Fowler up, and presumably because he is a triples machine, the OF was evidently very deep, the LF couldn't get to his high short pop over SS, and Wade scored the tying run. That Wade/Fowler/Frazier top of the lineup has been impressive, they should all be on the top 100 midseason lists, all three are still 22 and killing AAA already (Frazier is actually the oldest by a few months, Sept 1994).

Mike Ford is pushing himself into the fringes of the unsettled NY 1B discussion. He went to Princeton, undrafted FA and has worked his way up the Yankee system. He turns 25 in July, not a big prospect, but he hit well in AA this year (.862 OPS in 130 PAs) and has been crushing in AAA since being promoted earlier this week. He just hit his 3rd HR in 18 ABs in the first inning of a very early day game, he had a 1.274 OPS before that.

Gleyber with his 4th HR in 5 games, up to a .880 OPS now after a slow start.

Chance Adams with another very good AAA start, and he's completed seven innings in two of his last three. He has given up a whopping 6 ERs this season now in 8 starts, a 1.15 ERA in 47 IP between AA and AAA.

And Domingo Acevedo. who was aggressively promoted to AA despite having just ok results in high A (although a 52/9 K/BB ratio in 41 innings is impressive), was really good in his first AA start, 6.1 4 0 0 2 5, against Portland and Devers and friends.
