No one is calling Moncada a miss, certainly not me and PA wasn't either. But at the time this was written, he wasn't hitting well. At all. It's okay to say that. And it's logical to compare with the other high-profile Cuban signing.
And even if you think hes "wrong" it is certainly not some troll-level offense to suggest otherwise.

It might not be trolling because he's dumb enough to actually mean it, but saying they're "losing sleep" over what is the equivalent of a #1 overall draft pick struggling in his first exposure to pro baseball in America is pretty bad.

This is the kind of thing people complain about.  He was using stats in an intentionally misleading way, was called out for it, then claimed that it was "obvious" that he was being hyperbolic.  There's just no reason for the tone of his response to RSS.
@PeteAbe

Felix Doubront had a 3.87 ERA in 27 starts for the ’13 #RedSox and wasn’t in the postseason rotation. Starters this year have a 4.83 ERA.

Maybe because his last 7 games were 6.82 ERA, 16 BB, 24 K, 5 HR

@redsoxstats As was really obvious to others, point was how deep their pitching was then. That’s all.

Yeah I disagree. He's paid to report on the Red Sox and has to have a point of view. Pointing out that the guy is struggling isn't bad at all and suggesting theyre losing sleep over it may be wrong but, with all the bad news this year, is really not that big a deal.

I dont like him on Twitter and that Doubront tweet was not that big a deal. Some of you approach this way too pedantically--stats can tell a number of different stories without it being "disingenuous." That seemed as innocuous as it gets.

Between here and everywhere.
I wasn't sure if I should start a new thread so I'm just bumping this one.

Carrabis absolutely tore into Pete Abe today in a blog on Barstool. He talks about Pete's twitter battles with fans along with their personal beef. It's worth a read.
This has been going on for a couple days now. For those who don't want to give Barstool the clicks - Pete called some rando on Twitter "Grand Wizard" because the person claimed to not like Price. Pete doubled down when challenged and repeatedly called the guy a Klan member. A few days later Pete posted a tweet at midnight apologizing because "I thought you were someone else."

Carrabis, rightfully, took him to the mat for issuing a half apology in the same way the Bruins announce coach firings.

I had no idea there was bad blood between the two of them. The stuff about Sandoval's IG account is pretty funny. Pete sounds like a miserable guy.

He's pretty thin skinned. If you said something about him in the Boston.com comment sections for his stories (back when they had those), he would always respond in the most condescending and dickish way in the comments. He never really answered people's questions or explained points, he just used it as a way to treat people like crap if he could, especially if they questioned his statements or conclusions.

I also feel like the amount of shit Boston beat writers have to endure on Twitter is something I couldn't even imagine. To be honest, I periodically notice Pete get testy with some people for comments that seem, yes, somewhat benign on their face. But i usually assume there is some back history there with these guys.

None of which is to excuse Pete from calling people racists who, well, aren't racist. At the same time, I imagine this is not the easiest part of the gig and feel like there is a clear edge to this piece that seems intent on taking "proper journalists" down a peg or two.

Because I'm sure other fanbases in cities like NYC, Philly, Chicago are always sunshine and roses in Twitter mentions.

Pete Abraham is a jackass. I mean there's no other way to look at it. His apology is a joke too, at no point did he think it was someone else, he just takes joy in the fact of calling people racist and putting people down.

There is a long history of Pete Abe being a total douchecanoe to readers since he got here. This is nothing new, not even unsubstantiated claims of someone being racist as he's done that before too.

PA is not good at Twitter, he just isn't. But he is a pretty good reporter (I found his piece about batting practice pitchers in yesterday's Globe interesting), so I don't read his Twitter replies. I like him more than most SoSHers though, so YMMV.

Yeah I don't know, I kinda like him. The people he's giving shit to are usually boneheads. He gets a bunch of boneheads on twitter. Like, his would be charitable responses if they happened here. I like he's not some anodyne schlub that clearly doesn't even care about what he's covering.

I'd also have to wonder about someone shitting on David Ortiz in 2015 for things done in batting practice. Check that--seeking out information with the interest of using it to shit on David Ortiz in 2015 for things done in batting practice. He was dumb to go there in public though.

Also, who the fuck is Jared Carrabis? Good god what an asshole. Why do so many sports bloggers still obsess over the big guys? This was 1,000 words about how Pete Abraham is mean to people on Twitter.

I actually had someone close to me say, don’t put this blog out. Don’t be the bully. They didn’t understand that Pete’s the bully. I was the kid that he bullied for years, who later grew up and came back to stuff the bully in a locker and set it on fire.

I just don't understand the need to respond at all. Pretty much every Boston reporter/columnist/media guy will get negative mentions. Not all choose to respond. And only one accuses people of being racist on multiple occasions. It's just a bad look.

He's good at his actual job, but the trolling of the fans just rubs me the wrong way. No reason at all to mix it up with idiots. But when someone has a criticism of a player, assuming it's racially motivated is ridiculous. Pate Abe has no idea what's in that guy's head or heart. Just stick to your job.

Jared Carrabis is a pretty good blogger over on BS who also appears on the Baseball Show. So it's not like he is someunkown basement dweller lashing out from behind the keyboard. Given Barstool's growth, I bet he gets as many eyes (if not more) on the stuff he writes as Pete Abe. The dude obviously has a chip on his shoulder a bit, but given how so many beat guys and columnists shit on bloggers on a regular basis I don't blame him.

I am sure guys like Carrabis will let it go as soon as guys like Pete do.

ICBW, but I think engaging with readers on social media is part of the job description for a sports journalist today. I don't think the Globe would be OK with it if PeteAbe only used his Twitter account to post links to his articles and offer real-time commentary. Of course, this expectation falls more harshly on female writers, and any sympathy you have should be channeled in that direction; PeteAbe can and should do better.

Yeah I certainly don't blame you for that. Even if he's right, it isn't a good look. I think these guys have to engage in some way, and I don't think I could get by reading as much angry stupidity as he does every day without mocking some of it, but then that's one of countless reasons I shouldn't have that job, so.

I'm of a different mind on the racism stuff--I think he's using it as a means of mockery and pushing buttons. As the Globe's main Sox beat guy he's obviously gotta cut that shit out, but those guys richly earned their mockery.

Carrabis' tone is a bit much to me but ymmv. Fair enough on JC's response--I'll have to take your word on him. I will say--he should wait for a better smoking gun before throwing that post out there. It just read like two jerks on twitter trying to bait each other. Both examples. And he's very breathless over it; kind of highlights the one that's better at what he does.

I just can't get worked up about sports media anymore. Don't blame anyone for not liking him, but I just can't get around that's a lot of energy expended on the Boston Globe's Sox beat writer's tone responding to numbskulls on twitter.

This is where I'm at too. I'm not sure why Carrabis picked this fight, but this isn't a particularly original tactic. Though I will say, for the most part it works when the scrappy underdog takes on The Man. The only people it didn't really work for are Dennis and Callahan, mostly because D&C are humorless fucks and can barely string a few sentences together before vomiting all over themselves.

It's kinda interesting in the light of this recent dust up that the Globe is sponsoring a "Meet and Greet" with Abraham. CHB, and Carfardo tomorrow night. My parents are Globe subscribers so as a birthday gift, they got me two tickets to the event. So loyal and honest members of SOSH, which one of the three would you most like to see the least? I happen to think that Abraham is the best writer of the three with Carfardo the laziest. CHB I probably like the least since he has the most contempt for his readers. It's too bad that Chad Finn or Alex Spier two of my favorite writers won't be there.

CHB and Peter Abraham probably have the best stories, especially Shaughnessy. If he's motivated, he could probably spend hours talking about Ted Williams or the 86 Celtics. Abraham could talk a lot about the current Sox.

I bet Nick Cafardo will bring nothing. He'll probably tell you some well-known anecdotes, "Wade Boggs used to eat chicken before every game! It was nuts!" or "Roger Clemens loved the University of Texas a lot!" You'll end up falling asleep.

FWIW, the trolls since the Carrabis piece have been after Pete on everything. With every tweet, within the first three responses is something to the effect of "Racist much?"

Mistake or not, I'm having a hard time siding with anyone but Pete here.

I was driving home last night and I was listening to Mike Mutansky (spell? who gives a shit, really) show on EEI and this was their opening segment. I don't know who was on with him, I'm pretty sure it was Carrabis, but they were going through this like it was the Zapruder film. I made it through two minutes before changing the channel.

I don't if this is Carrabis' plan to break into the mainstream press by fighting with Peter Abe but if it, it's really fucking lame.

Abraham was an absolute jackass to me via email back in 2012. He sent me an email based on a twitter interaction I had with someone else on Twitter about him. (I didn’t @ him but the person who took issue with my tweet did – so he did some digging and found my email address.) Even before that, I wasn’t a fan.

But over time, I think his writing has improved (or maybe I just like what he writes about more than I did) and at most of the baseball-related events I attend, he’s almost always one of the local writers there giving his time to interact with the fans and take questions about the Red Sox and baseball. He seems to never miss an opportunity to be a part of one of these events (which almost all are for charity) and gives a lot of his free time to them. So since 2012, my opinion has changed a little. I still think he’s a bit thin-skinned, but I can also see that he’s just a person. And sometimes dealing with the other jackasses in the world makes you irrational and respond when you shouldn’t. You can say he should be more professional and he probably should be, but sometimes that’s easier said than done. I’ve acted the same online many times. I'm in no position to judge.

To me this piece just seems like a stereotypical Barstool “let’s pick a target and see how far we can go” tactic. I’m not sure why anyone would care that he called some rando on Twitter a racist based on an angry David Price tweet – but it isn’t exactly out of the realm of possibility of being true given some other attacks on Price. Get me some good dirt and write your 2000 word essay, great. But this? IMO, nothing but clickbait for the mouth breathers that soak up every item on Barstool.

That stuff even predates the Carrabis piece. Minihane seems to be the biggest crusader since the initial tweet, inciting his listeners and followers to go after PeteAbe. Of course, Minihane and Callahan have been the loudest "how dare you" voices against every Boston is racist/has a racist history comment (Bomani Jones, etc) made in the last few months, so it's not much of a surprise.

Agreed on the Barstool aspect. I like Carrabis, but he's coming off like a real asshole by pushing this personal grudge. Guess he sees it as an opportunity to "cash in" for whatever it's worth. As for Pete, I've decided to do what I would recommend Carrabis and others who don't like his Twitter game: unfollow him and ignore him.

Indeed. Carrabis is piggybacking on Minihane's crusade and using the outrage already whipped up a week prior by K&C.

I guess if Jared gets a weekly spot on K&C to talk about his podcast, it is a big win for a guy who has sporadic guest status with Bertrand & Zolak on TSH. Climbing the ladder, I suppose. Is Carrabis punching up at PeteAbe because Abraham works for the Globe and Carrabis for Barstool? Or are they on functionally the same level? Certainly Minihane is punching down, but he's kinda of turned that into his thing.

Yeah, I unfollowed PeteAbe a while back (well before this brouhaha) due to his generally trollish behavior. But I do agree he's a very good, fair writer in his actual Globe reporting.

I know that some writers/critics/etc. have two Twitter feeds - one "official" one that is uncontroversial and just tweets links and breaking news, and one "personal" one that they use for personal political opinions, etc. Seems to me that PeteAbe and his readership could benefit from that - those who just want his solid reporting could get it and those who like his combativeness could get that as well, just on a separate account that the rest of us don't need to follow.

I think Pete's a pretty good 21st century beat guy. I dont read too many other baseball beats, so its hard to compare. And I don't twitter, so no comment there.
