Season starts today with Stanford at Cal State Fullerton and Vanderbilt at San Diego so I guess it's time for a new thread.

Bryant opens tomorrow at New Mexico State, with Mount St. Mary's visiting the Aggies in Los Cruces next week.

Hope Springs eternal in Emmitsburg for Mount St. Mary's. Having an actual full time pitching coach should pay dividends...but hasn't made enough of a difference yet to keep the Mountaineers from being ranked last in the NEC by pretty much every outlet.

I don't get to hang WITH my kid at the games, but what I get to do is pretty awesome, too...(if not a bit nerve wracking a few innings a weekend).

I am going to be down in Greensboro in a few weeks for an MSMU @ NCA&T weekend series, then Raleigh for 1 game of MSMU @ Duke, followed by a weekend series MSMU @ Savanah State. Anyone around who wants to hit me up for a beer or come to a game or two, feel free...

I'll definitely be at the MSMU series @ Bryant later in the season, too.

Yea, looking forward to it. Cal had a hell of a freshman year. Okie/Beer/Raleigh would have been a nice 3/4/5, but he seems to have landed in a good spot.

Going to watch #17 Long Beach State play the OU Sooners this weekend. Here's hoping that the Sooners' pitching is better this year. (Can't get much worse than last year's.)

Their new pitching coach is my wife's uncle - Skip Johnson. He is a good recruiter and will be able to coach them up so you should see a marked improvement.

From a personal standpoint, it pained me greatly to see him go from Texas to Oklahoma. Would have much preferred to see him go to Texas Tech, where I figured he would go because he's good friends with Tim Tadlock. I just still can't get over seeing him wear those colors (puke).

Sorry, Bosoxen! While I'm on the sidelines of the Texas-Oklahoma rivalry (didn't grow up here so I don't really hate Texas), I do understand sports hate. (Still annoys me to see Ellsbury in pinstripes.) I'm looking forward to some baseball today! It's 70 degrees and sunny.

Well, your wife's uncle is working miracles already. The Sooners are 7-1, and the one game they lost, the starting pitcher was quite good (bullpen melt-down). Of course, the offense is playing out of its mind so the pitchers are getting tons of run support. But, the pitching is 100% better than last year.

I knew he would. He was supposed to be the heir apparent to Augie Garrido but apparently Mike Perrin had other plans. The only reason the Texas teams were even moderately competitive over the past few years was due to Skip's pitching staffs. I'm sure he's just tickled pink to finally have some offense and not have to worry about winning 2-1 Augieball games all the time.

I gave up on Augie when I saw one of our guys, who was deep in a slump, toe tap with his back foot and and stride backwards towards the catcher on every pitch.

Not sure when that happened but I gave up on him shortly after they got pummeled by LSU in the CWS. Rather than recognize that the game was shifting to a more offense-friendly environment (to the point where the NCAA had to deaden bats), Augie stubbornly clung to bunting five million times a game. Naturally, the best players stopped going to Texas because what top hitting talent wants to go to a program that goes out of its way to suppress offense (even that of its own team)?

But anyway, that's a topic for a different thread. Sorry for the hijack.

Bosoxen,

Your wife's uncle is the gift that keeps on giving.... Jake Irvin with another dominant performance last night -- 14 Ks, 2 hits, 1 walk. Sooners on a 9 game winning streak.....

On the other end of the spectrum...

I am in Greensboro watching Mt St Mary's. They've lost the first two - today by a competitive 4-2...which is much better than the last two games last week at New Mexico State where they gave up 54 runs (Yes, FIFTY-FOUR. 29 and 25). Not to make excuses, but it's tough for a weaker northern team to face their toughest opponents down south when they're least ready.

In Mt. St Mary's defense, New Mexico State put up 20 against Bryant in one game the week before. New Mexico State is really good...

Looks like my father-in-law and I will not be getting our wish. We had hoped the pitching staff would shine but the land thieves would lose a lot of 2-1 type games (not unlike the games Texas was losing of late). I guess only the good half of that is coming true.

New Mexico State is really good...
Speaking of pitching staffs, it looks like that might be NMSU's weakness. They're putting up runs in bunches, sure, but the games they're losing look pretty lopsided. To be fair, two of those losses are against top programs (Texas Tech and Arizona State) but the combined score of those two games was 28-6. Looks to me like State will make hay against smaller programs but will struggle with the big boys.

Well, Mt St Mary's basketball made it to "The Dance"...maybe baseball can take some inspiration and suck a little less (especially LHP #19) at Duke tomorrow...

End of the spring trip for the Mount - and not a good trip...0-7 vs. NC A&T, Duke and Savannah State...

BUT...two of the three at NCA&T were two run games, they were competitive against Duke but for one error laden inning and two of the three at Savannah State were walk-off losses (the first in extra innings).

After the carnage at New Mexico State, hopefully that's some progress towards a re-set and the start of conference play at Central Connecticut next week (weather cooperating...it's an artificial turf field, so all they need to do is plow. I am fully expecting it to be that miserable sort of baseball weather where you CAN play, but no one wants to)

Ahh...baseball. The crack of the wood bat and the smell of fresh cut grass on a warm summer day...

Or the ping of composite BBCOR at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, fortunate that they were able to get the snow off the artificial turf in time or there would be no game at all.

The first inning of The Mount @ Central CT State was the whole game, the whole season so far really, in a nutshell. Top half The Mount led off with a double, followed by a walk - great start - until the man on 2 got doubled off on line drive to Shortstop...

Bottom half CCSU rides the bunt (and sloppy Mount defense) and HBP train to three runs...none earned.

There's something surreal about watching a losing team lose. Pitching and hitting aren't even the problem...it's base running and bunt defense...

I hope the rest of you are finding your seasons of college baseball watching to be a bit more enjoyable.

Heard terrible news about Bryant's James Karinchak...out with a serious labrum issue (according to unsubstantiated ballpark rumor). I was looking forward to seeing him later this season.ImageUploadedBySons of Sam Horn1489844513.666721.jpg

I can't confirm the specific news you've heard but there is major concern in Smithfield about his elbow.
Horrible for him... likely cost him a lot of money

That is terrible...3 months away, and...

At New Britain, as soon as I say the hitting and pitching aren't the issue - we get this...
ImageUploadedBySons of Sam Horn1489863559.016040.jpg
Good pitching of course, but no hitting...literally...

(If the picture isn't clear enough, that's a 2-0 no-hitter for CCSU's Appel against Mount St Mary's)

I know he had an MRI the week after he was pulled but haven't heard a diagnosis. Best case, they're hoping he can come back late this season. FYI, he was complaining of forearm soreness, rather than shoulder
He put on a lot of muscle in the offseason and is a workout fiend so I'm not sure if this injury is symptomatic of any of that as opposed to a torn UCL or something

I'll look for an update this week. Coach Owens is pretty intense and they've played poorly these past few weeks so Ive stayed away!
I think they can still win the NEC even without J.K. Steve Thetgee is a soph and pitched really well last year so he'll slot in as the Friday starter.
Bryant's weekend series at FDU was postponed but they actually picked up a 3 game series at Brown for today and tomorrow

Bryant's finally starting to get healthy a bit.
James Karinchak was named Collegiate Baseball newspaper player of the week and NEC pitcher of the week for his 1 hit, 11k outing against Wagner.
They followed that up by beating #25 UCONN yesterday.
5-1 in conference after a sluggish non-conference schedule.

Cool ballpark in a cozy setting at LIU Brooklyn. ImageUploadedBySons of Sam Horn1492958247.078920.jpg
The Mount nine however, continue to struggle (despite eking out a few wins against LIU Brooklyn and UMES). It's the base running that kills me still...the kind of baseball i.q. stuff that shouldn't happen at this level.ImageUploadedBySons of Sam Horn1492958418.841672.jpg
I do rather like the viewing area in the main athletic building. Literally puts you on TOP of the visitors bullpen.ImageUploadedBySons of Sam Horn1492958566.151807.jpg

Not much to speak of re: MSMU @ Bryant...the two teams might be in the same conference, but they aren't in the same league.

Highlight of the weekend for me was when Nick Angelini grounded into an inning ending double play in B6 of game 1 and the subsequent two quick outs to start B7...

Saw that crazy game between the OU Sooners and TCU yesterday. Walk-off three run homer by Renae Martinez; Sooners win, 9-8. Since their awesome start to the season, the Sooners' pitching has come down to earth a bit. The bullpen is completely unreliable, just like that of the Red Sox. Thankfully, the offense doesn't quit, or the Sooners wouldn't be in most of these games.

Brackets set. Lots of noise about Clemson being a surprise host. They limped through the last month of the season. To their credit, it was heavy backloaded with Louisville and UNC late and their RPI and SOS were both high. UVA had a case, but their out of conference SOS was really weak and I think that hurt them. That's the thing about baseball, mid week games are dependent on convenience to some degree, so who is nearby greatly effects the out of conference SOS. Clemson has Georgia and USC close, so that's 5 games right there, plus they schedule College of Charleston and Coastal, so they get some decent out of conference games without too much trouble.

Anyhow, anyone checking out games this weekend?

They have to do something about the makeup of this tournament. They have to seed this 1-64. It makes no sense at all for Virginia who was a top 15 team to be a #2 seed in TCU's region. They need to get away from placing so much emphasis on travel distance as it matters for some teams and doesn't for others. The top 16 teams should host and then seed the 2-4 seeds from best to last. The top seed should have the #17, #33, and #64 rated teams in their pod and work from there. Of course some adjustments for conference opponents would have to be made. But the current format stinks.

Totally agree. The regional travel makeup of this tournament is so unfair. But shouldn't the 1 get the 32, 33, and 64? I would think the 17 should be headed to the 16 as a 2 seed.

Also agree. Indiana went to Arizona Florida Alabama and Hawaii to avoid the cold at the start of the season. School is out. Indiana gets to play close to home in UK regional.

Good recap of last night's ridiculously entertaining Texas-Long Beach State game, which included not one, but two game-saving defensive plays by Texas - the first, a diving outfield catch to prevent the game-winning run from scoring in the bottom of the ninth, the second a bare-handed relay catch-and-throw to the plate to prevent a game-winning inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the 10th. Texas went on to win 5-3 in 12:

And now Long Beach State, who beat the Longhorns 4-3 tonight after beating SDSU earlier in the day and Texas are going to play again on Monday night at 11pm ET/8pm Pacific. I could watch these teams play 100 games, let alone three.

These teams are so fun to watch play one another. If this game is tied LBSU is going to need to find pitching.
