In the theater, there is a superstition that you never say the word Macbeth inside a theater as its bad luck. So instead people simply call it "The Scottish Play."
I thought it was a deep dive into Lawrence Tynes' ancestry, which is Scottish.

But they think him MacBeth, ambition is his folly, the Pats are a polymath, pain in the ass, massive pain, Atlanta is Banquo, Seattle's MacDuff, and Birnam Wood is Goodell on his way to Dunsinane.

Think you’ve got a handle on the 2016 draft class now? Think the teams have answers on all their players?

Here are four names: Malcolm Butler, Marcus Cannon, Logan Ryan, James White.

Those four played a total of 42 snaps—15 on special teams—for the Patriots in Super Bowl 49. Butler was the team’s fourth corner, Ryan the fifth corner, Cannon was the fourth offensive tackle and White was inactive for that game. The following summer Butler was the only one of the four who was considered a lock to make the roster going into training camp.

Two years later? Those four played a total of 271 snaps in Super Bowl 51, only three of them coming on special teams. Butler and Ryan, the team’s top two corners, played every defensive snap. On offense, so did Cannon, now considered a rock-solid starting right tackle. White played 71 snaps and had 14 catches for 110 yards, six rushes for 29 yards, and scored all three of the Patriots’ touchdowns.

So there’s our lesson for the week: Patience matters in player development.

Cyrus Jones - Super Bowl LIII MVP. Meanwhile, this year Pats had 2 rookies who played major roles in Mitchell/Thuney and another couple of rookies who played minor roles in Valentine/Roberts. Valentine probably would have played more if he had been healthy. And there's Brissett who started and won a game at QB. Not too shabby for a team without a 1st rounder.

And Jonathon Jones made some big plays on special teams this season.

And as far as guys who didn't play much of a role this year, Ted Karras didn't play down the stretch but started the first two weeks and stuck as the team's only interior backup most of the season. And D.J. Foster effectively redshirted but his skill set suggests a Dion Lewis replacement down the line.

11 points doesn't seem safe against a Martz offense. I wish they would let Brady air it out a little. I trust him.

Crazy that the first Super Bowl was the closest to a blowout they have had yet it was their worst team against the best opponent

Agreed. They were the top offense and 7th ranked D. What's funny is how it's basically forgotten (outside of Philly, anyway) that the 2004 Eagles team was very good, too. 2nd in offense, 8th in defense.

Greatest Show on Turf just sliced up the Pats D. Got a bad feeling about this. They should take a knee and play for overtime.

My takeaways:

- Wiggy was huge and so was Ken Walter's nose
- Rams offense played nearly the entire game between the 40 yard lines
- Rams D was much better than I remembered

Interesting decision to run on third and eight or so with 2:20 left in the game when a first down wins. There's no real clock advantage there. The two minute warning is coming up either way. Pretty conservative. Forgot about that. Also forgot how bad the punt was, though in retrospect a better punt maybe doesn't leave enough time if the Rams score.

Madden's commentary is a bit too conservative. With the Rams having no timeouts, the Patiots could have kneeled at any time and run at least 40 seconds or so. It wasn't a consideration until third down, which never came.

3rd and a few in field goal range and you run a stupid reverse for A 10 yard loss? Who's calling plays here? Kyle Shanahan??

Vinatieri was pretty terrible early on in this game especially with a short miss and then a blocked FG.

I've really never thought about it, but the Patriots have won five championships and they really have never had that thing where the game is effectively over and you get to celebrate on the sidelines for a couple of minutes. The closest has been a few moments after the McNabb pick, and maybe a few seconds while they were sorting out the fight after the Butler Pick. Barely enough time for two Gatorade showers in five games. It's uncertainty to elation in two seconds, every time.

Biggest disappointment from that Super Bowl is giving up that many points to a scrub quarterback in Jake Delhomme.

1 for 9, 1 yard passing with 3 minutes to go in the 2nd Quarter.

Took Carolina 28 minutes to have a play gain more than 5 yards.
A lot like 49. Until the 40 plus yard catch by Matthews with 26 minutes gone in the game, Wilson was 1-3 with two sacks and with the longest play from scrimmage being a 7-yard scramble.

Pats D gives up nothing then Delhomme drives 95yards at the end of the half.

Are Steve Smith and Brady the only players who played in 2016 from this game?

Good stuff. You could actually kind of make the case that the 3.7 point average margin of victory is not reflective of how close the games have been. Points in overtime are weird in the playoffs, because someone has to get them and the final margin can't be closer than 6 or 3. If you just look at the score at the end of regulation, the average margin has been like 2.8 points in the seven games.
