So, assuming everyone comes out, the top 7 looks like in TBA order...

Fultz
Ball
Smith
Tatum
Jackson
Fox
Monk

That is pretty loaded and all freshman.

I would use a top ten, with Isaac, Markkanen and Ntilikina. All are freshman, except Ntilikina. At this point, I think once you get past Fultz, Ball and Smith, the rest could fall anywhere in the top ten.

Doncic isn't responsible for the hyperbole. There's quite a bit of film and other info on this kid, and if he continues to develop I believe he will be a top 3 pick in the 2018 draft.
Oh hey, we may have a top 3 pick then!

I don't remotely think ball is better than the next three. Remotely. I think the Celtics might be a good spot for him. But an it ball backcourt works defensively. And I don't think fox is a lottery pick.
I'd put Ntilikina 5th fwiw.

I like the clip about a minute in where the kid trying to guard him just looks at his coach and shrugs his shoulders after the giant kid just shoots right over him.

I remember seeing that kid when he was 12 or something and he was 7'4". I just feel bad for those kind of people, it makes me really uncomfortable to watch them.

That's what she said.
How does Romar keep his job? And how does he get Fultz from Maryland to go all the way to Seattle? Did he think it was in Washington DC? Obvioulsy Porter is listening to Brandon Roy and his beat up knees in going to U Dubb, but Fultz going there still shocks me.

This could be like last year with LSU missing out on the tournament. Plus, my wife is in Tempe at the ASU campus right now and was last night, on a work trip, college recruiting for a tech company. I should have either gone with her to go to see Fultz, or had her go and report back.

"Washington: The Huskies are in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season, and equaling their worst Pac-12 record under Romar. They have finished 5-13 twice in Romar's 15 seasons at the helm."

He isn't a good coach.

It seems like it is actually really hard to win if you are bringing in freshmen and giving them the keys, no matter how good the individual is. UK, Duke and Kansas tend to succeed with that method but they usually have a few talented upperclassmen to balance it out.

Brandon Roy is his high school coach. That is a nice fit for a future NBA player.
Interesting. More interesting is that Porter's father was hired as assistant to Romar last year, although mitigating this is that Romar apparently is Michael Porter Jr.'s godfather.

In addition, the younger brother Jontay, is going to UW the next year. Wonder if Michael will stay an extra year to play with his younger bro.

be interesting to see if Fultz misses the NCAA, if it impacts his status.
One of the main anti Simmons narratives was he missed the NCAA can he really be the number 1 if he can't lift his team to the NCAAs.

To have back to back first overalls never play in the NCAAs would be kind of crazy, and kind of hits the NCAA nonsense of having to play a year too.

I'm trying to figure out what is happening physically to make it look like he runs like he shit his pants. Something about flexibility in the hips?

To the extent people are looking into the 2018 draft at all, Michael Porter Jr. supplants DeAndre Ayton as the #1 high school prospect. Porter Jr. is going to WA.

2018? Now we are really into guessing games. The name I see being mentioned very, very highly by fans who post about European players always put Luka Doncic at the top of the list. He is a 6'8" guard.

At 17 years old, he already gets 20 minutes and good numbers in the Euroleague.

Similarly to Simmons whose godfather had been an assistant at LSU for the two previous seasons. Recruiting begins earlier and earlier in this game. Whatever it takes to gain an edge.

Romar's "coaching" is like most college coaches and is tied to his recruiting. Like Simmons (again), the players surrounding them are god awful players.

So Josh Jackson puts up 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals line against KY and hit 2 key 3Ps to start the 2nd half. Perhaps more importantly, he is 8-14 from 3P range over the last three games. Below are highlights. One thing that immediately strikes me is his handles.

Seems like he's a better prospect than Jaylen Brown was at the same stage? Also, since he will be leading his team in the tourney and Fultz will not, I wouldn't be surprised if he goes #1.

I don't think there's much doubt that he's a better prospect than Brown was. He does everything better, except FT% and FTA rate, while turning the ball over less, and has a much better defensive reputation, along with nearly double Jaylen's steal and block rate to back it up.

Though I'd be surprised if he goes #1. Regardless of what he does in the tourney, I think his shot will remain a concern, and Fultz has a ton of upside with no significant red flags. GMs should recognize that he just doesn't have much talent around him. Simmons didn't end up getting dinged for LSU's failures last year while Ingram won the national championship.

I really love Jackson, I just wish I had more faith in that shot. Josh Jackson with a jumper is a top ten player in the NBA.

Very nice all around player, which means he will have a high floor as a prospect, but, man, that release is just fugly. There's no way in hell I take Jackson over Fultz but he's definitely in the mix when we miss out on the top pick.

Fuglier than Ball's?

The release is horrible to watch if the ball doesn't go in the basket. But if it goes in the basket enough during the NCAAs and workouts, man thinking about and Jaylen with both hitting 35+% of 3Ps, and that's something special.

A guy can dream. . . .

I think I hate their jumpers equally. Jackson's shooting from the line (55%) is also troubling. He needs a lot of improvement just to get to a passable level.

Monk would be far from the worst get for Philly if they end up in the 7ish range. Will need the shooting to support Simmons at the point.

Would the Huskies win even 3 games if Fultz wasn't on the team? They are so bad it really makes it hard to even figure out how Fultz himself is playing.

On a more general note - I feel like all I ever read about top prospects are concerns about their shooting. Any thoughts there? Are these kids so good at the high school level that they never need to learn to shoot? Was this always a problem and I just never read these types of reports before because of the Cs were always stuck in the middle of the draft?

I realize that a player like Fultz who was also hitting 80% of his FT as a freshman would be a megastudprospect, it just feels to me like all the under 20 types near the top of the draft have questions about their shooting lately.

It wasn't a question with Murray, but it is with a lot of them. Pretty much all 19yo players are unfinished products.

A couple of factors at play. The lottery is increasingly dominated by one and dones, who by definition have spent less time in college working on their games. By and large its athleticism or size or both that makes someone a lottery talent. You're right that that athleticism/size means that they could dominate in high school and to some degree in college without needing a reliable jumper. But I think an even larger factor is the evolution of the game. Having a non-shooter at a position other than the 5/rim protector is increasingly untenable.

There isn't nearly enough time spent at the grassroots level teaching the proper fundamentals to players. Too many games played on the AAU circuits and not enough time in the gym working on fundamental parts of the game. So many kids have unreal talent but aren't basketball players if that makes sense. Basketball IQs are at an all-time low these days.

I kind of left the question out there for discussion, but there are a few things I think about:

1) simply put, at least for top of the draft, the NCAA is no longer the NBA developmental league, which affects a couple of things:
- because of the one and done, players don't have time to develop skills before they were drafted. What would Jordan or Magic's 19 year old scouting report have looked like, in other words.
- because of the prevalence of one and done, the top players also don't have to develop skills to win in the NCAA (and top NCAA teams prioritize winning over development of NBA recruits)

2) Athleticism has become more important in the NBA and therefore it is more and more rare to be an elite NBA recruit and also be a shooter. As an analogy - the same way it is hard to be a shortstop and a hitter.

3) It's no different than it ever was other than I am actually paying attention these past few years.

I don't really know how much of any of these is true, and was just interested in some other perspective.

Magic might not be the best example because as a 19 year old he destroyed the NCAA tournament. But it's true his shooting was a question mark.

I think Josh Jackson is awesome. He's the number 3 prospect for me in a much better draft, vs Brown being a non consensus 3 in a much weaker.
So I don't think it's controversial. His shot is horrendous, it looks like it needs a total tear it down and start again.
However, I'm sold on just about everything else. He's good to very good with that shot. With a half decent shot he might be a super superstar.

He's not a great fit for a team that needs shooting first on the wing, but if you have shooting elsewhere, yes please. This is a classic fit vs talent thing. Ball is shooting and passing but nothing else. Jackson is everything else.

Josh Jackson doing Josh Jackson things and filling the box score, 10-18 from deep over the last 4 games but 10-22 from the line over the same time period.

Well, I can't speak to all skills, but FT% is historically high this season (.772); so if players are coming into the league with fewer skills, they are certainly developing better ones once there.

Lonzo made more of an impact in the first half with his passing, defense and on the glass, but Fultz is gonna put up 25/8 in the NBA someday. He makes it look so easy.

It's ridiculous how bad Washington is outside Fultz. I don't think any other player on the squad would get minutes on UCLA, in fact I'm not sure any of them would even make the team.
