Felger is on his game today. Totaling ESPN and Jeremy Roenick and Van Pelt et al. He only has 45 minutes before the USA/Sweden hockey game. He off the charts.

When it comes to the RS and Pats, all of their criticism (some of which is inspired and firmly grounded) must, ultimately must, advance the following narrative --

1. The owners are cheap;

2. The brain trust arrogant;

3. All of them lie ("spin").

That's the dictate from the producer to drive the ratings.

It's black/white thang -- 'EEI is Pravda; we are Radio Free Europe; the truth will set you free.

It's too bad cause they are smarter than this.

I will say this, everything you say is true, except for the part about it being a "dictate from the producer" or even from the PD. Were you familiar with Mike Felger before this show? For the record, I like him, even though he's incredibly wrong a lot of the time when it comes to the Red Sox, but this has been his agenda forever. When he covered the Bruins he used to call their owners cheap. Then he moved on to the Patriots. Now he's trying to shoehorn his "cheap narrative" into the Red Sox discussion, mainly because he has a hard-on for Jason Bay, and because he's a Brewers fan and therefore knows more about Mike Cameron than Theo or anyone else does. The main problem is he thinks the whole focus on defense is spin, mainly because he doesn't follow sabremetric trends, not that any mainstream media member does, and thus this is the first he's hearing about zone ratings, etc. This is, to any informed fan, obviously 100% objectively wrong. Whether you agree with their philosophies or not, you can't deny that they believe in them.

That said, the Big Show makes it look like NPR by comparison. Except it's also more entertaining/funny than the Big Show because they're not completely playing characters. There's no phony "Hey I'm real mad at you for being late to the show!" type humor. I don't know, it's hard to explain, and I don't like Massorati at all and I predict he will be replaced eventually.

I think you will get a bigger helping of the Gold Medal game yesterday, with them ridiculing Kessell and Joe Thornton for not even being factors in the game.

I think they'll also go where no media was able to yesterday.........that despite standing on his head to make saves throughout the week, Miller let in a ridiculously soft goal to lose the game yesterday.

Today should be a good listen. I'm actually fine with the Tebow stuff as well.......he performed better than expected yesterday.

Total and complete speculation on my part, but Felger was absolutely murdering the Bruins (and Chiarelli in particular) all afternoon long and even more brutally after the deadline passed. Since that station is the "flagship station of the Bruins", I wonder if the omnipresent "they" told Felger to cool it and he got pissed and left.

When I heard he left early, that was the first thing I could think of but I have zero evidence behind it, other than circumstantially, it seems to fit.

Sounds like a PMS day for Felgy. USA lost. The Bruins came out and put up a stinker against their rival in a pivotal game, and the Bruins Brass' response was to essentially trade Morris for a German version of him. The term lateral comes to mind. Then the GM came out and marginalized his pussified ways by saying all the available trades were marginal upgrades that were too expensive. Wolski for guy who hates hockey and a decent prospect? Tough to beat. Torres for a 2nd and a marginal D-prospect? I can't believe how much that is for a guy who would lead your team in goals. He seems like a passionate fan, and I'm not sure I could talk that long about it without wanting to get Chia on the phone and rip him. Shit, the idea of watching Miroslav Satan float around 10 minutes a game for the rest of the season makes me want to walk off the Tobin, let alone walk off a radio show.

I know Felgy has left early before to go the Comcast studio to tape his show. Where are the Celtics playing? The Palace? Maybe they are on the air at his normal time slot for the TV show.

Felger was on Comcast at 6:30, which he hasn't done in awhile. The night before he said he would be on at 6:30, but didn't indicate he was leaving the radio show early. Chiarelli is supposed to call tomorrow and Felger said on the radio he wasn't going to yell at Chia the same way he had yelled at the Bruins radio guys.

It will be interesting to see if Felger goes easy on Chiarelli or if he hammers him like he's been doing since 2pm yesterday.

I think that depends entirely on how Chia reacts to his criticism, because he will definitely criticize him. If Chia is a bitch about it, this could get fun.

I expect him to be a bitch about it, so this could get ugly.

So do we segue from Felger hilariously filleting the Bruins for having no balls (good show) to Mazz riffing on the Patriots being cheap -- "how dare they allow the Bears to get the jump on Peppers and bring him to Chicago ... BB should have been in Peppers' driveway in his bathrobe and slippers at 12.01 if necessary!" Or will it be something else?

Felger just said that he and Massarotti are going to suit up for the Washington Generals and take on the Globetrotters on March 27. He wasn't kidding.

He was ranting and raving about how annoying he finds this time of year with everyone blathering about their NCAA brackets. Lots of "I don't care who you have coming out of the west!" type stuff. I may not always agree with him and he might piss me off from time to time, but man does he make me laugh.

I usually love Felger's rants and think a lot of bits he does are hilarious.

But the last segment where he essentially yelled at a Pittsburgh radio host was so lame. Felger, and not the Pittsburgh guy, came off as an unbelievable honk.

Now maybe that was the goal of the segment, but to me it really fell flat. Especially because the Pittsburgh didn't seem willing to play along.

Felger and Mazz did a hook up with the Pittsburgh CBS radio affiliate (sister station). Classic Felger. Rips into Cooke, mocks the city of Pittsburgh, brings up the 2001 AFC Championship game, and tells the other hosts he is afraid to have his wife and daughter anywhere near Ben Roethlisberger...all in about 5 minutes.

I thought that was great actually.

I agree, I loved it. You get the feeling that Felger was trying to have some fun and the Pittsburgh guys wanted to have a more serious conversation. About halfway thru Felger just said fuck it and let loose.

Love him or hate him, Felger is by far and away the best pure entertainer on Boston sports radio. Their show has really been great the past couple of weeks.

Oh yeah, I love Felgie. I think he's a great entertainer, which is really what talk radio is all about. But I just thought the bit fell a bit flat...probably mostly due that guy from Pittsburgh not willing to play along.

I caught it and thought Felger came off as an enormous tool. It's one thing to show passion and get fired-up, it's quite another to feign outrage and resort to shtick. I thought the Pittsburgh guy really exercised quite a bit of restraint to not bail on the interview sooner. The irony that Felger is from freakin' Wisconsin and he's sitting there describing Pittsburgh as "backwater" and shitting all over the city, even while it experiences a highly publicized renaissance, is rich. Felger's act has grown as tired as Ordway's down the dial.

They absolutely wanted no part of it. Funny how their big comeback was, "yeah, well Pittsburgh was just voted America's number one most liveable city!!!".

Then after hanging up Mazz says, "Well they didn't see that coming. I doubt they'll do that again", to which Felger replies, "Meh, sure they will. It's just that next time they'll know what they're getting into."

Yeah, but that's also why I probably didn't like it. As Johnny The Bone mentioned, it came across as "schticky." "I'm Felger and I'm a DB so I have to be rude to these guys from Pittsburgh."

The reason why I like Felger so much is because I don't think he does a lot of schtick. I think he genuinely believes almost everything he says. However, because it was so full of schtick, I just thought the Pittsburgh bit was kind of lame.

Oh, you're right, it was "schticky". But it was for five minutes and I thought it was funny - it's not like he goes "into character" often (like Pete Shepherd for example). And in reality, he truly meant some of it. For years he's been talking/writing about how much he hates the Pittsburgh fans and the Pittsburgh media. He always said they were the biggest homers in sports regarding the Steelers.

I don't know, maybe I enjoyed it because 90% of the time Felgie is ripping the Boston teams and home town fans. It was nice to see him playing "cocksucker contrarian" to another fanbase.

And to Johnny, I agree that it's ironic that a guy from outside Milwaukee is calling another city "backwater", but Felger always laughs when people say he isn't a Bostonian because he's lived more than half his life Massachusetts.

In there
I think some of you guys are whiffing on this one.

The one thing Boston sports related that will turn Felger into a raging homer is the Bruins. The guy was all but rooting for someone to take out Crosby during the 10+ days of build-up to last night's shit-show of a game. He wouldn't quite say that's what he wanted to happen, but he'd been finishing his thoughts on the subject with a "of course I don't want anyone seriously injured, but I kinda do".

Was some of it schtick? Sure, because that's just how Felger rolls. But I do think he was genuinely fired up about the whole thing.
