Alex was the 20th round selection in the 2009 draft. He was a junior at Duke and most recently played for Orleans in the Cape League. Both at Duke and with Orleans, Alex played RF and worked as the closer. At 6'4" 215, Alex was drafted as a pitcher. It was at Fenway for the Cape League All-Star Game prior to officially signing that Jason MacLeod told Alex that the Sox were now planning on using him as a position player.
