And while a lot of these guys may know they are not going to make the majors, many are looking to have a career in baseball, coaching, etc, and doing a couple of years in the minors makes them far more valuable for those jobs.

In terms of Tebow, ESPN is hammering on the publicity stunt angle. It's not like the Mets really gain anything by selling an additional 20k tickets at Port St Lucie. Even if he goes to Brooklyn which they own, the Mets absolutely pack it in there now, so a few hundred more tickets a game at a minimal price means nothing.

Ultimately I think Tebow has about a 1/250 maybe 1/1000 chance of making it in baseball. But on the extremely unlikely chance he makes it, he could be very good for a few years
Great park in Brooklyn btw. Right on the beach at Coney Island which makes for a fun day, and the park itself is very nice. Well worth the trip.

My father is on vacation in Stuart, Florida for one week and he decided that the best use of his time was to drive out to the Mets' facility to see this sideshow on Monday. My dad isn't a Gators fan, a Mets fan, or a Jesus fan, but he loves Tebow. I can't understand the power this guy holds over people.

So the guy plays baseball 5 days a week and gets his college football job on the other 2. Absent the virgin part, not a horrible life.

I had a cousin who was a devout christian. I was friends with the girl that he dated (and eventually married) and was told that he refused to have sex until married.

They did, however, perform oral on each other all the time.

I can confirm that this is not at all uncommon in those circles. Source: I grew up a devout Christian and attended Liberty University.

In what I found to be a surprising development, Tebow is off to the Arizona Fall League.

Waste for the Mets, and this actually has the potential to create issues down the line. Under the AFL eligibility rules (at http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/winterleagues/about/?league=119&id=player_elig) each team can only send one player below AA, which I would assume Tebow applies for. You mean to tell me this isn't a spot that would be better used for a guy like Wuilmer Becerra, Desmond Lindsay, or Eudor Garcia?

Define "better."

In terms of baseball, and player development - sure, you may have a point.

In terms of ticket sales, and fan interest - there's no way that Becerra, Lindsay, or Garcia are "better" options.

I try pretty hard to ignore this thread. It is, and always will be, a sideshow and completely irrelevant to actual baseball. But ... people just can't help themselves. Whether it is to mock what happens on the field or to inaccurately define something as "better" - this is a flame, and some of y'all cannot help yourselves by flying into it.

Indeed, this whole thing is a shameless cash grab by both player and club. Yes, this blatant sideshow is barely worth comment. Yet, here we are on Page 4 and post #170 on something everyone agrees is both pointless, shameless, and despicable.

It is also true, and worth noting, that "clickbait bullshit" about Tebow makes it rain no matter what the venue. People - yes, even us, the discerning and "smart" fans - can't get enough of this story. The proof is that unlike actual baseball stories and actual baseball players, this shit keeps getting clicked on, and commented upon. At a certain point, that's on us - right? If we truly found it so abhorrent, we'd be able to ignore it or at least let the obvious aspects go uncommented upon.

The Mets deserve credit for making a whole bunch of people who were unaware the Arizona Fall League existed suddenly interested in not only their entry, but also in their prospects in general. FWIW, I'm sure that Becerra, Lindsay, and/or Garcia will get the chance to play Winter League ball – and that no one will care when they do. And I'll further guarantee that hit, strikeout, or rainout - people will talk more about Tebow in the AFL than they would if he weren't there.

So... better? Yeah, I think the Mets are better off with Tebow, for a bunch of reasons.

Yep, your first point was the intended one, for baseball and player development, given it's the nature and history of the AFL. I spoke clearly with intentions to the best club of the health of prospect growth and club future, which I think we mutually agree Tebow does not help. My apologies for not making my central focus clearer.

The marketing aspect is fair to bring up, as I hadn't considered it in the totality of my post, which was trying to focus, albeit rather inadequately, on how Tebow to the AFL impacts the fellow players around him, and ultimately organizational development. As you note, this is an awful clickbait bullshit gimmick, but there's no action without reaction, or perhaps more accurately, a ripple effect. While Becerra/Lindsay/Garcia might get that shot, this is the type of action that keeps me cynically interested about how potentially down a slippery slope the Mets will go for Tebow. In other words, this boils down to club performance against marketing.

Is Tebow better for marketing? You bet those virgin Tebow asses in those seats he is; no question. In those respects, Tebow is the better choice, certainly; would never argue to the contrary. To use a financial comparison, a firm's top priority should be shareholder wealth above all else; for minor league clubs and the AFL, that's attendance numbers and interest in the overall product. Tebow certainly brings a name to the AFL, and certainly fulfills the interest aspect of the parallel. But, unlike a corporation, there's an opportunity cost by doing so here that I think involves some degree of materiality and/or risk vs. reward tradeoff in terms of pure baseball that we should certainly question as smart, discerning fans.

The thing is that Tebow won't bring extra revenue to the Mets by playing in the AFL...at least as far as I know. Maybe he's actually better at baseball that we're giving him credit for.

Is ESPN going to cover every game Tebow plays in? It's a little much.

Wut?!?!?!

“@KariVanHorn: Tebow signing autographs. Fan has what looks like seizure. Not moving. Tebow puts hand on him and says a prayer. Man breathes. WOW.”

“@KariVanHorn: Heading back to the station but I have video of it all. I just witnessed a MIRACLE. #Tebow”

PHOENIX - Despite being heckled by fans during his post-game interview after his Arizona Fall League debut, Tim Tebow stuck around to sign autographs for fans braving the heat.

One fan in the front row suddenly dropped, prompting others to yell for a medic.

Tebow rushed to the side of the fan, who was convulsing and foaming at the mouth, while EMTs administered care.

While waiting for the fire truck to arrive, the fan went limp. The crowd fell silent while waiting for the sirens.

Tebow reached over, put his hand on the fan and said a quick prayer.

Seconds later, the fan gasped for air and the EMTs were able to assess the situation.

Watch the video above to see Tebow jump into action.

It was god's hand, not Tebow's. Nothing to see here.

Yeah Imma go ahead and say it was a coincidence, thanks. Tim Tebow might be a fine upstanding young man. He's not laying hands upon anyone to cure them.

A few years ago my mother starting choking in a restaurant when we were at dinner. A man immediately came over and performed the Heimlich on her and saved her life. We were immensely grateful, of course, but that wasn't a miracle either.

Kevin Towers invited Garth Brooks to Padres' spring training a couple of times. Brooks was always one of the first guys to arrive and last guys to leave. Towers thought having a guy in the clubhouse with more money than God and no chance to make the team who worked that hard was a positive influence on the team's young players. I'm guessing the Mets are hoping Tebow will have a similar effect on one of their minor-league teams next year. Of course, the Padres probably just had an extra guy in ST instead of giving someone else's invite to Brooks, so your point about burning an AFL roster spot is very valid.

It sounds like Garth Brooks also had friends in high places.

This isn't sexist, but he runs like a woman. Arms down and going side to side instead of pumping up and down from pocket to ear at 90 degrees.

Interesting. It can't be a lack of coordination or training. The fact that he was an excellent collegiate athlete and washout level pro athlete puts in the top 99.999%. I wonder if it's simply a training issue - transitioning from finishing his swing and releasing the bat to a sprinting position.

Tebow apparently injured his right leg trying to steal second in a game.

That is your daily Tebow news.

Translated; "Wow, Tim Tebow got on base! Probably HBP"

Actually his average is .147

He's got more AFL hits than Kyle Schwarber...
