Mauricio Dubon hit his third homer today. He's been having an interesting season, seems to have taken a more aggressive approach in AA and has seen a huge spike in ISO. A player to watch closely.
SoxProspects guys believe his likely outcome is Marco Hernandez, which is a pretty valuable piece to have laying around for many teams. Given the scouting, the stats will have to continue to exceed expectations to be viewed as a future starter. High floor/low ceiling type of guy.Mauricio Dubon hit his third homer today. Next season. Aside from the playoff point, Kopech has missed a lot of development time in the past two seasons because of his off-field / character problems. When do they move him up
A level?
Ended up 4-5, bringing his average up to .373Dalbec with another home run(his 5th) along with a single tonight.
The word on him before the draft was he had great power but very poor contact skills. Contact hasn't been an issue so far in Lowell.
For some context on this, in AAA as a reliever:Promote. Joe. Kelly.
That and he's already repeated the level so it's not like he's going to learn more in Greenville. His strikeout rate in the 2nd half is 30% (200pa, 60k, exactly). He's really looking like a bust, honestly.Chavis promoted to Salem, the hats good. Ewe given that he'd slumped in Greenville. They must be seeing adjustments that they like and want him to keep playing longer this season (Salem headed to the playoffs, right?)
Watching from behind the plate. 1 infield hit through 4 innings. Nobody that I be seen has pulled the ball. Working in "off speed" pitches pretty liberally and getting strikes and swings and misses to go with weak contact. There's no gun here, but his fastball is really really loud when it hits the catchers mitt. It's Kopech night
Some of the reporting on Devers that I'd read this year is that he not only hasn't outgrown 3B like was initially expected, but has actually been plus defensively at the position. Did what you saw match that?Devers is all over the field at 3B. In little league we'd be calling him a bit of a ball hog. The only hit was when he cut off the shortstop way over in the shortstop's space.
Not unless he develops a third pitch and get's his slider above average. Right now he's a one pitch guy but that fastball is plus maybe (probably?) plus plus, which at these levels is unfair. He's throwing as hard as the very best majors relievers as a starter. Which is insane, but can anyone not worry about that arm holding up?6ip, 1h, 2bb, 8k.
He's 2 years older than Anderson Espinoza but he has to be closing the gap.
He was not challenged tonight. Nothing was hit remotely hard, and so many at bats ended with swings that just weren't close.Kopech has given up 3 or fewer hits in 7 of his 10 starts this season. 4 is his high.
My read of him last night was along the lines of the pitching coach quoted in the previous post. He's got control of an of speed pitch, I guess the slider, which is coming in as fast as other guys fastballs. He threw it to both corners of the plate for called strikes and got tons of swings and misses plus weak contact. Yeah, he's in high A and it will be tested against higher competition, but last night was the most dominating pitching performance I've seen outside of red ball. No one pulled the ball. In 7 innings. Guys hitting .290 had no chance. Not unless he develops a third pitch and get's his slider above average. Certainly no shortage of range at all. He was moving all over the field. He didn't have a chance to make any spectacular plays, but nothing I saw contradicted that. Some of the reporting on Devers that I'd read this year is that he not only hasn't outgrown 3B like was initially expected, but has actually been plus defensively at the position. Good to hear, I'd suspect with two pitches if he can throw that hard, healthy the floor becomes pretty solid. Add a change or similar and hello. I think a lot of people kind of subconsciously assume he'll be a reliever. Flamethrower, two pitches. won't hold up etc. But he's throwing HARD and easy into the 7th I mean... if his arm can stayed attachedHe was not challenged tonight. I wouldn't put the "bust" label on him too quickly. He was making real strides on his K rate and putting up some gaudy numbers prior to his injury this season. That and he's already repeated the level so it's not like he's going to learn more in Greenville.
