Holy fuck, that Özil pass. Wish there was someone at Arsenal that could receive those kinds of passes. Making the corpse of Schweinsteiger look good. Jesus Christ.

The pass was amazing...the whole play was awesome because Schweinsteiger was moving so slow, but was calling for it (rightfully so) for 40 yards. He looked like Bartolo Colon running the bases, but he got to the spot and Özil put it on his foot.

Germany´s defense had a lot of trouble. Let´s see if Hummels will play the next match and brings more stability. Khedira played alright, I wonder what happens with him, as Jogi Löw surely will increase Schweinsteiger´s playing time.
Schweinsteiger´s goal was superb technical skill. Gomez fires that into the 24th row (as do 90% of the players), that was really hard as a drop-kick from the side.

Ukraine vs. Poland could be an interesting match.
I still haven´t seen a really dominant team which showed a balance between steady defense and a good attacking flow, but it´s early.

Today´s matches:
Spain vs. Czech Republic
Sweden vs. Ireland
Italy vs. Belgium

Lot´s of action and favorites!!

I've heard Hummels maybe by the last game of the group stage.

And good call, not enough credit given to how easy Schweinsteiger made that play look.

The announcers for the Spain - Czechia match seem to be suffering from NESN disease - too much time talking about anything but what we are actually watching.

Lots of German media reports showing Hummels will be returning for the Poland match, some English reports also showing the content.

Spain is absolutely controlling this game, but they are passing it too much without the intent to score. When you´re passing it three times in the box and get no shot off, instead of once and trying to shoot, there´s something wrong. It annoyed me a lot in Germany´s game yesterday :)

Spain have looked good this morning but can't finish to save their lives. Their inability to develop a prolific striker during this period of players will be my lasting impression of this cycle. They haven't carved up the Czechs or anything but tons of really clever play leads to ultimately nothing.

I've never understood the hype around Morata. He's had some timely goals but he's awfully wasteful and doesn't seem to actually score enough goals. Silva has put him in goal scoring position on several occasions already and he's barely looked like scoring

I had no idea Max Bretos was still floating around. I'm getting flashbacks to watching EPL highlights on Fox Sports World 15 years ago. ESPN couldn't dig up Lionel Bienvenu to partner him, just for old times' sake?

Chances getting bigger and bigger for Spain here...Silva misses wide from 15m. And Spain´s still playing a ton of passes. It was obvious the Czech players would get tired at some point, but they got some chances, too.
And the ref is a total joke. Sometimes stops play on easy but defensible calls and on the next possession lets it run like it´s rugby. No clear line. And at least 3 missed offside calls from assistants (like that bycicle in 76th min).

Spain were certainly good for their 3 points although the Czech team generated a few golden chances. Was mostly one way traffic and a pretty decent Czech side were made to look very ordinary. Once again it seems to be a question as to whether Spain's attack can score at a rate good enough to keep them progressing. It's hard to argue against Juanfran - Pique - Ramos - Alba shielded by Busquets

Someone is going to massively overpay for Morata this summer. I'm hoping it's Chelsea.

Yeah, I can't fathom that Morata is starting over Aduriz. Aduriz may not be sexy but he's much more the type of player that Spain needs. It's a shame that Negredo had only a brilliant 6 months at City because it looked like he might really become a solution for Spain for a very brief period there.

What just happened, another "flare"? I switched on ESPN3 to hear Tirico talking about a false alarm.

Honestly, shouldn’t we all just have this entire month off from work?
Then your wife would tell you to go out playing with the kids / work in the garden / go shopping with her.. :)

The stadium full of green with white and orange dots and a complete yellow quarter looks perfect.
There should be more giveaway shirts like at the NBA, when you´re buying tickets for 150+€...

Watching this game on the alternative aerial cam online. The view has a few disorienting hitches, but that Irish attack that ended with a shot off the bar was mesmerizing.

I'm so lucky that the nature of my work means I can pretty much watch every game. Ireland need to make one of these chances, else they might get Zlataned.

I'd forgotten that Randolph was once eligible for the USMNT, he'd probably never have really considered it, but he'd be a great option now, 29 and arguably better than any of our keepers.

The Swedish side is horrible outside of Zlatan and Isaksson, but when you have Zlatan you always have a chance.

Yep. He also deadpanned the goal celebration because ZLATAN didn't score the goal, he just helped make it happen. He really is the best.

Dustups between EPL veterans are always fun. Glenn Whelan and Seb Larssen exchanging shoves like it is a foggy night in Stoke or something.

The problem for Zlatan is that he was born about five or six years too late for Sweden. When he was still a young player from 2002-2006, Sweden still had some talented midfielders and strikers (Henrik Larsson, Anders Svensson, Freddie Ljungburg) that would have been able to get him the ball with more consistency. By the time Zlatan reached the peak of his powers those guys had aged out and left Zlatan with an incredibly mediocre supporting cast, kind of like Ronaldo in Portugal but worse. You saw that today in some truly dreadful midfield play on offensive outside of Olsson; they probably should have won this game but they spoiled several opportunities.

Ireland played pretty well I thought. Going to need that effort and the some vs Italy and Belgium. Unless he was gassed I don't know why Houlihan was taken off.

From a talent perspective, this is the worst Italian team that I've ever seen. But this match should be interesting as you've got an uber talented Belgium likely to be far less than the sum of its parts versus a historically mediocre (especially beyond the back four) Italy with a superior manager who knows how to get the best out of his crappy squad.

If I'm going to give wilmots credit Felleni is in as a target man for crosses and free kicks. I'm a bit surprised to see him though.

Buffon's hair is one of the wonders of the new world. It should go to a museum or something when he retires.

I can't figure out that neck tattoo by Nainggolan. Belgium have been pretty meh, can't get a grip on the ball and seemingly outnumbered everywhere
Belgium reminds me - every time I see them play - of an all-star team that has never practiced together before. There's loads of talent but they always seem to have met each other 15 minutes before kickoff.
