Quick rundown on John-Micheal Liles from earlier today...before any trade confirmed.

The Carolina Hurricanes are likely to trade defenseman John-Michael Liles by the NHL trade deadline
The Carolina Hurricanes entered the month of February needing to decide if they were going to be buyers or sellers at the NHL trade deadline. After trading captain Eric Staal and forward Kris Versteeg on Sunday Feb. 28, they confirmed that they will be sellers. Their next logical move is to trade the rest of their players who will be free agents after this season. One of those free agents to be is defenseman John-Michael Liles. He’s likely to be moved today.

It’s important that the Hurricanes can’t retain any salary on him because that limits the number of teams who could be interested in him. Carolina could just take on a roster player for him, but it certainly limits the number of teams that will be interested in him. The Chicago Blackhawks could use someone like him but they likely don’t have the cap space necessary to pull it off without moving someone.John-Michael Liles has six goals and 15 points in 64 games this season. He doesn’t create much offense when he’s on the ice anymore, but he is still a very capable stay at home defenseman as he’s quietly one of the better shot suppressors in the league. Liles has also proven that he can handle top pairing minutes and perhaps on a different team, his lack of offense would be more justified.

The cost is fine. I honestly haven't seen much from him lately but the cries of this halting development ring hollow. It's help on defense, it can't hurt right now.

Liles plays 20 minutes a night, 52.3% CF. Mostly used with Brett Pesce in Carolina. 3rd in SH TOI for Carolina. He's useful.

He's not a bad player, and they didn't give up much. I think it's fair to question if the Bruins would be better serviced giving minutes Liles is going to get to a Morrow/Trotman/Colin Miller and aiding their development.

Between here and everywhere.
I'm sorry, but that package they gave up for him is way, way too much. A 3rd would have been fair value. A 3rd, a 5th, AND a decent prospect?

Sweeney gets trade raped again.

Calling Camara a decent prospect is an extreme stretch. He's probably not in their top 20 of prospects right now. He has 0 goals, 5 assists in 29 games this year. He's not useful.

I'm on cshea's side here, looking at his advanced stats he's still got something left in the tank.

I agree that I wish more of this season had been spent developing C Miller & Morrow, but in the event those two don't step up, Liles could be useful in the playoffs.

edit: Camara is a bum, he was probably included simply to stay below the contract limit.

Camara is AHL filler who was probably not going to be offered an RFA contract. I hardly doubt anyone is going to miss the fifth rounder.

Disagree on Camara being AHL filler, or not a decent prospect.

He scored 36 goals as a fighter in the OHL, he's 22, and has shown talent. He's a project, for sure. But he still has potential.

I'd trade 20 minutes a night for Miller and/or morrow over what Liles might do in the playoffs. Assuming they get in in the first place.

He scored 36 playing alongside Mark Scheifele as an overager. If he becomes some kind of player, good for him - but I don't think it would've happened here.

I have less of an issue with this trade. Liles provides better possession numbers, and he hopefully won't pass it to the other team in the slot. I am not much of a fan of Camara, and while I don't like giving up a 3rd, the 5th is pretty meaningless.
