This is eerily close to the Patriots season this year. After starting 10-1 they finished the regular season 2-3. Two of the losses were by less than a TD to the playoff bound Eagles and NFC North champion Vikings, the latter on the road. They also lost on the road to the eventual 9-7 Cowboys.
http://www.musiccitymiracles.com/2016/1/6/10725722/report-josh-mcdaniels-is-interested-in-the-titans-jobJohn Clayton of ESPN was on 102.5 The Game in Nashville earlier today and said that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is interested in the Titans job. Do you know why he is interested in the job? Two words- Marcus. Mariota.
I would expect Kraft would ask for 2 drafts. Not 2 draft picks, 2 whole Giants drafts.[SNIP]
But it raises an interesting parlour game -- what would you consider acceptable in trade from the Giants for Belichick if the Maras have incriminating pictures of him and he were to force his way out of Foxboro? ODB and two firsts?
Edit: snowmanny beat me by a minute with the link.
ODB, 2nd and 3rd this year, 1st and 2nd next year. If you get the first this year that is the one Roger will steal.I would expect Kraft would ask for 2 drafts. Not 2 draft picks, 2 whole Giants drafts.
Which underscores the absurdity of this parlor game because the Giants are a sick team and Bill is adamant he won't be coaching in his 70s. He turns 64 in April and he'd be eating the poison pill.I would expect Kraft would ask for 2 drafts. Not 2 draft picks, 2 whole Giants drafts.
Wow. That is somewhat of a shock to me. Only two years, rebuilding that shitty roster, getting the franchise QB. I mean, 8-24 in those two seasons is lousy for sure, but you'd think a fairly established guy like Lovie would have gotten at least 3 seasons. Particularly with Jameis being in year 1. I wonder if they have in-roads on another HC (ahem, Coughlin?).Tampa fired Lovie Smith.
I was thinking Chip Kelly.I think Tampa's going to make a serious run at Josh McDaniels.
That, plus Kate and Rooney Mara[SNIP]

Mark Dominik @MarkdominikESPN 16m16 minutes agoGlazer better have a gem in his back pocket; otherwise he's an idiot. Of course, that franchise has been a mess for some time now.
NFL owners are buffoons. This is the one professional sport, with only 8 home games a year and an avalanche of network money, in which you can afford to be really patient. But nooo ...

Wow. That is amazing. And brings up an interesting question: Who isMark Dominik @MarkdominikESPN 16m16 minutes ago
With Lovie Smith fired I would expect Dirk Koetter to be named head coach within the week. They still will interview a few other candidates
What I'm hearing this morning on Tampa radio is that a couple teams were looking at Koetter. They weren't happy with Lovie's defense and decided to fire him it promote Koetter to not risk losing him and have Winston go backwards.Wow. That is amazing. And brings up an interesting question: Who is
Dirk Koetter?
FAKE EDIT: TB OC
I imagine I am one of the only Bucs fans on this forum but the only shocking part is the timing. I live in Tampa and everyone I know basically just expected him to get fired next off season instead of this one. Lovie somehow gets a free pass with the national media but he is a really really bad coach. He showed no adaptability or willing to change his defensive scheme to fit his personnel. Of course, the defense was terrible and he constantly jettisoned better players to bring in Chicago retreads or guys off the scrap heap because they fit "his" system. The defense had the same issues throughout the year, most of which were just basic football (for instance, the Bucs got killed by fucking slant routes the entire year.)Wow. Happened in San Diego this week. Of note, the other Pagano survived there as well.Maybe this has happened a lot before but I don't recall a HC surviving and that many of his assistants being canned.
The San Diego Chargers announced Monday that six coaches will not return for the 2016 season. They include Offensive Coordinator Frank Reich, Offensive Line Coach Joe D'Alessandris, Tight Ends Coach Pete Metzelaars, Wide Receivers Coach Fred Graves, Defensive Line Coach Don Johnson and Assistant Offensive Line Coach Andrew Dees.
Flip Miami and New York and I think you are right. I think HueJack knows he is the top coach on the market and is going to go with the best QB situation. I also think Ross is smart enough to know that HueJack and Tannenbaum will murder each other inside of 9 months. So if TB is all in on the Welcome Back Koetter angle... they'll probably interview one of the darker complexion coaches on the staff first to satisfy the Rooney Rule and then announce Koetter's promotion.
That leaves 6 other open HC jobs. Anybody care to make some guesses?
I'm thinking:
Philly: Adam Gase
NY Giants: Doug Marrone
Cleveland: Teryl Austin
Miami: Hue Jackson
SF: Chip Kelly
Tennessee: Josh McDaniels
You would think Josh would be the heir apparent when BB retires to get the Pats job if he stuck around. He must have a sense that BB is still a number of years away from retiring which would likely coincide with Brady hanging it up as well.ESPN reporting that McDaniels (who is still only 39!) is interested in the Titans job. It makes some sense, especially if Josh thinks Mariota is the real deal.

Maybe I'm being naive or a homer, but if I were Josh I would be hesitant before jumping ship again. He's one of the top paid assistants in the NFL (apparently roughly $1.5M/season), he probably has rock solid job security in a notoriously unpredictable league, and he gets to work with the GOAT Head Coach, the GOAT QB, and perhaps the GOAT TE.
Yes indeed. IND could easily end up at the bottom of that pile in the medium term, especially with geniuses Pagano and Grigson calling the shots. That could be a fun division--McD with Mariotta, Jacksonville seems on the right track, plus Indy and Hou.
Kate MaraSo if I win the Powerball tonight, who should I buy?
That'd probably be an interesting thread: which one would we want to succeed BB? If we imagine that this happens in, say, 4 years, and Brady gives you a transition year to start out.Re. McDaniels and the Titans gig, I think it's really, really hard for these guys to be wooed year-in and year-out by other teams and not jump ship. Yes, it makes more sense to work for a stable organization where you have great job security. Yes, the loyalty of working for someone who threw you a lifeline at a time when others would not (shades of Belichick and Parcells after Cleveland?) is a powerful motivator.
But at a certain point, you have to remember that there are on 32 of these jobs in existence. And for every Romeo Crennel who has managed to turn his time in NE into a couple of HC gigs, there are hundreds more who never get that opportunity the first time, much less a second.
If I had to guess, we lose McD and keep Matty P, for whom this is his first HC rodeo.
The money is a big factor too. Even if McDaniels is making 1.5m/year now as the highest paid assistant in the league, he would easily double or triple that by taking a HC job. Tomsula was the lowest paid HC last year at $3.5m.Re. McDaniels and the Titans gig, I think it's really, really hard for these guys to be wooed year-in and year-out by other teams and not jump ship. I usually prefer defensive minded coaches as head coaches. I don't know if the numbers bear it out, but they seem to be more successful. That'd probably be an interesting thread: which one would we want to succeed BB? If we imagine that this happens in, say, 4 years, and Brady gives you a transition year to start out.
McD's HC experience would probably help him avoid some mistakes a first-timer like Patricia would make; at the same time, I've seen much better halftime adjustments coming out of our Defense (some of which, of course, is due to BB). On the third hand, who's going to identify, select and train Brady's heir? I really have no idea which of them I'd prefer.
Am I crazy to prefer MP over McD?You would think Josh would be the heir apparent when BB retires to get the Pats job if he stuck around. He must have a sense that BB is still a number of years away from retiring which would likely coincide with Brady hanging it up as well.
I don't know, when teams hire people like the guy below, good grief, Josh is Bill Walsh by comparison. You only get a few bites at the apple, if you get one at all. McDaniels was a stupendous failure not only in Denver, but also as OC in St. Louis so he really only has his NE resume as positives. If some team wants to hire him as their Head Coach this year, I think he'd be crazy to say no.
