Natstown has made it to the front page on Yahoo! Sports!

This is wonderful, but did anyone read the comments below people are leaving on this article? Ridiculous.

Posted by: Dionysus May 6 2009, 09:43 PM

The article is flawed. It clearly does not explain the true nature of the phenomena that is NatsTown

Even worse, the commenters there and at BBTF clearly don't understand the roller-coaster ride of a true citizen of NatsTown. Every day is like a simultaneous ejaculation and shart. A shartulation, if you will.

Posted by: NickEsasky May 7 2009, 07:43 AM

Those comments are hysterical. Those damn bandwagon fans over at SoSH.

Posted by: The Four Peters May 7 2009, 08:08 AM

What angers me is that those commenting bad doubt the sincerity of our citizenship in Natstown. Natstown is not a joke. It's a way of life.

Posted by: Drocca May 7 2009, 08:22 AM

I don't read comments in any thread on the internet other than this one. I suggest you guys start adopting the same policy.

Posted by: The Four Peters May 7 2009, 09:05 AM

In true Natstown fashion, we will be writing in votes for Lastings Millage.

Posted by: URISoxFan May 7 2009, 09:07 AM

In true NATSTOWN fashion I thought the July 4th series was down here and was planning a bash to honor the occasion.

In true NatsTown fashion, I will be skimming off some of Lastings' votes.

Posted by: TomRicardo May 7 2009, 11:29 AM

See I think it would extremely fitting the lone Nationals rep be a minor league player.

Posted by: hawaiirsn May 7 2009, 01:00 PM

Today's events seem to help Lastings out, with a huge blow to other NL OF All-Star probable Manuel going down, down, down...

Posted by: TomRicardo May 7 2009, 03:41 PM

I already voted 25 times. I am already shopping for my Natinal League All Star Jersey. On the back: Thrilledge

Posted by: dylanmarsh May 7 2009, 04:29 PM

Voted 25 times and made sure to include the newest member of the PED club. It should be a great All-Star game.

NATSTOWN!

Posted by: phrenile May 7 2009, 04:49 PM

Along the way, I lost count of how many times I had voted, so I kept voting until it told me to stop. Kind of like how the Nats don't track outs and just keep playing until someone tells them they've lost and can go home.

For the lazy (like me) I suggest recording a macro to fill in the first page apart from the CAPTCHA (the votes remain checked if you do your 25 ballots in one go). I used SeleniumIDE (Firefox addon), but any form autofill (there's a bunch out there for FF) works just as well.

Not only did Lastings Milledge get 25 votes from me, but so did every other Natinals starter on the ballot.

The only way to improve on this is would be casting 25 write-in votes for the departed Jim Bowden somewhere.

Remember when you are voting not to vote for other NL outfielders who might win. What's the point in casting a vote for the good Mr. Milledge if you cast one for his competition as well?

Posted by: dylanmarsh May 7 2009, 09:51 PM

Lastings just doesn't get it. NatsTown! is not for the strong willed. You must give yourself completely to its succubus.

QUOTE
"My whole life, I've been playing this game for a long time, I could take a lot of stuff, more stuff than anyone else," Milledge said. "That's the edge I have. I don't get discouraged easy. I have thick skin. I don't care what anybody says about me. I think that's what makes me better than another person getting sent down. I know I can overcome anything. There's nothing in this game I can't take."

The idea of of the NL having an outfield of Milledge and Elijah Dukes is hilarious. It felt un-NATSTOWN to vote for Dunn however, as he's actually a decent player(although not in the OF, so maybe it's OK). Advice?

Posted by: phrenile May 7 2009, 10:39 PM

Doesn't voting for multiple Natinals players reduce the probability that Milledge would get in via the one-player-per-team rule? Or is that too remote anyway.

Posted by: URISoxFan May 7 2009, 10:41 PM

Not if we can get them all elected.

The only way Milledge is getting in is if we vote him in. So election is the way to go...if we get him and Dunn in, then they both go. If anything, electing Milledge will screw Dunn over.

Valid concern. I basically voted for JUST Milledge and no other OFs.. then regular voting for the infield. I still want to see Pujols, guys.

I occasionally check a few NATSTOWN! blogs, to amuse myself, and to my shock none have reported on the Milledge Project yet. Considering it showed up on Yahoo! Sports, I fully expected at least Federal Baseball to find it and thus this thread, and make some sort of angry comment.

Maybe they aren't angry. Maybe they are true residents of NATSTOWN! and just understand.

Posted by: yep May 7 2009, 11:11 PM

Okay, I just did my business over there 25 times. Usually I don't have much patients for these things, but it's actually really easy to cast the same ballot over and over.

Posted by: Grunherz54 May 8 2009, 12:06 AM

Twenty-five more votes for Milledge!

Posted by: knucklecup May 8 2009, 12:43 AM

Add 25 more to Milledge.

Posted by: ngruz25 May 8 2009, 01:32 AM

Alright, so if this is really going to happen, we need some strategy. Last year's vote tally for the top 5 went like this:

1 Ryan Braun, Brewers - 3,835,840
2 Alfonso Soriano, Cubs - 3,353,840
3 Kosuke Fukudome, Cubs - 2,994,935
4 Ken Griffey Jr., Reds - 2,907,746
5 Corey Hart - 2,366,008

So if we really want to get Milledge into the game, we need about 3 million votes. That means we need about 120,000 people to vote 25 times each. Or can you vote 25 times a day? That would change things greatly.

Still, getting Colbert Nation on board would be hilarious.

EDIT: Actually the real question is how many votes the LAST ranking Outfielder got last year? In theory we can assign that many votes to Milledge as those votes probably came from people spamming their whole hometeam roster. Then we simply need to make up the difference.

I don't really know how it works over there. Possibly. He seems to be quite a hater, for no particular reason. Also have no idea why the post was moved. Those boards seem like chaos. Hopefully someone over at the Report reads it though and thinks its worth bringing up, it definitely does have humor potential.

Apparently *any* former email address will work. I used a slew from several different defunct companies or accounts (AOL, Excite, local web servers) and had no problems.

You also can make unlimited Gmail accounts. The only caveat is that they need a pre-existing "secondary" email. But once you create the new one that then becomes your secondary on any future accounts you make.

I've registered and voted at MLB with the following:

thrilledge@gmail.com
welcometonatstown@gmail.com
natinals@gmail.com

("Natstown" was already taken. And in true NATSTOWN! fashion Gmail addys don't recognize CAPS or exclamation points).

If 1000 people vote 25 times each and every day until the ASG voting cutoff, that's worth 1.25 million votes.

That's either encouraging if expanded to a huge scale, or discouraging in a NatsTown sort of way if we let down Lastings.

Fight the good fight!

Now where'd I put Colbert's cell phone number...

50 more votes for NATSTOWN!

Maybe someone with more technical knowledge can figure this out. But would it be possible to create a grease monkey script for those who use firefox that will make it so the only thing you need to do to vote is enter the 5 digit security code? It would make it much quicker to save the 5 clicks or so between each vote, if all that were required was the 5 digit code and then every 25 votes you enter a new e-mail address which you could sign up through mailinator.com. Ideally it could just be like those mafia war scripts that people use on facebook.

Anyone know how to make this happen?

Posted by: Trlicek's Whip May 9 2009, 02:11 PM

I set up a http://twitter.com/lastingsmillege for Lastings Milledge.

It's early and our applications for it aren't sussed out yet, but there's time between now and 7/2/09 to figure it out. With phenomena like hashtags + trending topics there, and the fact it's exponentially growing with new users like a wild frontier gold rush, it's a beneficial option to have when waging a social networking offensive on that beachhead.

And FYI I made sure that the tiled-wallpaper background I chose to trick it out would completely obscure the action shot of Lastings at the plate. NATSTOWN!

You can add 25 more votes for Milledge to the cause. You can thank Fox for forcing me onto MLB Gameday to follow today's game (we got Braves-Phillies here), so I figured I should get in gear and get behind this great movement as long as I was online anyway.

Question - would anyone be surprised if this organization called Milledge up and tried to use him to sell tickets if he's at the top of any ASG voting leaderboards in June?

That would be smart, and positively un-NatsTown. They'll leave him in AAA and keep trying to convince people to vote for Zimmerman and Dunn.

I would caution people against using fake email addresses to vote for The Thrill. While it never asks you to confirm your email, they do send an email to thank you for voting. My guess is if that email bounces back, they don't count the votes. Making Hotmal, Yahoo or Gmail accounts is fine, but just giving them some natstown.edu address won't work, I don't think.

I'm at 200... and counting.
It does let you submit any e-mail which has a valid format (i.e. x@y.com), but as some have mentioned, it might reject it if the confirmation message they send you is bounces. And sure you can set up a zillion hotmail/gmail/yahoo email addresses, but it's a bit of a pain to go through the process for each one. Luckily, if you have a gmail account there is a very easy way of generating as many alias addresses as you want and they all redirect to the same inbox (and you can set up a filter to automatically delete the ones sent to a specific alias).
All you need is to include a + sign at the end of your gmail username. e.g. if my email was Rice4HoF@gmail.com, I could use Rice4Hof+mlb@gmail.com, and that looks like a different email address, but anything sent there will go to my regular inbox. You can also set up a filter to automatically delete anything that was sent to this "new" address you created and you don't have to see any spam. You can create as many of these as you want.
Details are on this gmail help page: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12096

Let's say between SOSH and everyone else who have picked up on this there are 10,000 willing participants. If we each vote 25 times that is only 250,000 votes. But if we each vote 25 times a DAY, 20 times, now we're talking 5 million votes. So for everyone who has already votes 25 times, get out there and vote again today. And tomorrow....

Yep, it's intrinsic to the system. They are the ones who have chosen to make a mockery of their league, and we are playing by their rules. With any luck, Thrilledge is (rightfully) elected to the AS game, as is Manny (not so rightfully), highlighting the embarrassment that has been the Selig administration.

Syracuse outfielder Lastings Milledge injured in at-bat versus Indianapolis
Posted by Mike Waters / The Post-Standard May 11, 2009 10:51AM

Syracuse outfielder Lastings Milledge suffered an injury to his right hand while attempting to bunt in the first inning of the Chiefs game against the Indianapolis Indians here at Alliance Bank Stadium on Monday morning.

Milledge was facing Indianapolis pitcher Ty Taubenheim with no one out and Chiefs leadoff hitter Ryan Langerhans on first base. As Milledge squared to bunt, the pitch from Taubenheim struck Milledge's right hand.

Milledge writhed on the ground in pain as Chiefs manager Tim Foli and team trainer Beth Jarrett came to his aid.

Cory Patterson replaced Milledge in the lineup.

If last years results give us any clue into this year, he will need at least 250K votes by the end of May to be in the top 3.

Outfield
RANK PLAYER NAME NL TEAM TOTAL VOTES
1. Soriano, A. Cubs 352,267
2. Fukudome, K. Cubs 325,456
3. Griffey, K. Reds 300,230
4. Beltran, C. Mets 253,297
5. Holliday, M. Rockies 249,881
6. Burrell, P. Phillies 220,596

It will probably also help that Griffey, Holliday and Burrell are out of the league. Manny moving to the NL would have almost surely made him a definite top 3 vote getter, but I imagine he will now lose a lot of votes with his 50 game suspension. You have to think that Soriano, Fukudome and Beltran are definitely the biggest competition this year.

Posted by: AlNipper49 May 11 2009, 12:51 PM

So to put things in perspective we get about 10,000 unique IPs here daily. Literally everyone of those people need to vote for him 25 times. That likely isn't happening. The most effective thing that you can do is vote 25 times then post the link explaining what this is on your facebook walls, twitter feeds, email buddies, underage Korean boy-workers, etc.

Posted by: Dernells Casket n Flagon May 11 2009, 01:03 PM

The final results were actually much worse too.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The Cubs also will send outfielders Alfonso Soriano (3,353,977), an All-Star for the sixth straight year, and Kosuke Fukudome (2,994,935), the first-year Major Leaguer who will become just the third Japanese position player to start in the All-Star Game, joining Ichiro and New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui (a replacement in the A.L.s starting lineup in 2003). Overall, Fukudome is the eighth Japanese native to make the Midsummer Classic. Fukudome, who was among the N.L.s leading outfielders from the outset of balloting, edged out Cincinnati Reds veteran Ken Griffey, Jr. (2,907,746), the most popular player in the history of All-Star balloting.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

With Griffey out of the league, I imagine it is possible that 2-2.5M votes will be enough.

If Milledge is in the top 3 (or even the top 5) when the first ballot comes out it might be a big enough story to get some blogs and more websites covering the underground campaign. Vote NATSTOWN! early and often.

Here's a way to vote lots and lots of times.

1. Download the iMacros addon (available for http://download.cnet.com/iMacros-for-Internet-Explorer/3000-12512_4-10586882.html or https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3863). This will download, and restart your browser.

2. Leave the left side iMacros bar open, and go through the voting process once so it registers your picks: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/all_star/y2009/ballot_reg.html.

3. Once you've submitted it once, click here: http://tinyurl.com/p28fth. This will go to the correct page.

4. Type in the 5 digit registration code, then click Continue on the left.

5. It will complete the voting once. Now, on the left sidebar, in the Repeat Macro Max field(by default displays 3), type 23. Then click Play (Loop).

6. The program will go to the voting window, pause for you to enter the code, then you click continue. It will do this 23 times.

After it finishes, repeat steps 3-6 with a new email address.

Profit. Natstown.

Broken finger? The Chiefs were saying it was a broken hand. (And WTH were they doing playing a game at 10:30 am?)

Will the all star game be canceled now?

I got my red on and made my daily contribution of 50 votes.

An injured Lastings is even more ASG-worthy than a merely shitty Lastings.

Posted by: Drocca May 11 2009, 07:30 PM

I just find myself much less interested in baseball than yesterday. Very sad.

Posted by: SeanBerry May 11 2009, 07:41 PM

Whoa...let's all calm down.

They didn't even say they would put him on the DL. No way he isn't back playing in a cuple of weeks much less July.

If anything, this will HELP us in our dream. He is already off to a shitty start down there and now he'll have less time to get called back up.

The only question is if he will be wearing his AAA uniform in St.Louis in July.

Oh, I'm not concerned about the All-Star chances. I just hate that Lastings won't be able to play baseball for a little while. I spent a lot of money for the AAA package.

25 more votes for Lastings from me. I need to step it up in the next few days though.

How does internet advertising work? Does MLB get more ad revenue from Sprint if people keep voting, and therefore get more pageviews for Sprint's ads? At least they don't have any pretense of integrity in the voting process.

Does anyone remember when Chris Bosh made a YouTube rap to elicit NBA All-Star votes?

We should have Lastings do a rap pleading for votes. I'm open to suggestions on how to make this happen.

You do realize that Milledge has a tattooed history with making his own rap mixes, right?

But, he will have a lot of time on his hands (or at least one of his hands, yuk, yuk!) so now is the time to text him your request. Or does he still have his MySpace page?

We have an http://washington.nationals.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090511&content_id=4678468&vkey=news_was&fext=.jsp&c_id=was on our injured All-Star to be:

QUOTE
Outfielder Lastings Milledge suffered a broken finger Monday while attempting to bunt in a game for the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs.

According to Nationals acting general manager Mike Rizzo, Milledge will see a doctor Tuesday and will most likely have a pin inserted into the ring finger on his right hand. Rizzo said it was too soon to determine the prognosis, but said the injury will definitely put Milledge's comeback on hold.

"It's going to take away at-bats, and for a player who is in the early part of his career to miss a chunk of at-bats is not good," Rizzo said. "He has things to work on while he's down there, so this is definitely a setback."

Milledge, who began the season as the Nationals' starting center fielder and leadoff hitter, was demoted after just seven games and was hitting .256 with no homers and four RBIs in 21 games with the Chiefs.

More fame. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/baseball-insider/2009/05/the_lastings_milledge_all-star.html has discovered our little campaign:

QUOTE
The Lastings Milledge All-Star Campaign
In case you somehow have found this blog without tripping across any of our site's terrific Nationals coverage here and here, AND you've also been trapped under a rock for the past month, once promising center fielder Lastings Milledge has, in fact, been demoted to AAA Syracuse. A player the team targeted as one of its great hopes for the future is now toiling away, desperately trying to re-discover his swing and confidence and, the team hopes, avoid burning any long term bridges with the organization.

Well, one group of baseball fans who seem to be most interested in flexing their own editorial weight have another goal for Milledge's minor league campaign: To get him elected to the Major League All-Star Game.

That's right, one of the most established blogs in the baseball realm has taken it upon itself to elect a minor league outfielder to the Major League All-Star Game as an open mocking of the All-Star Game's fan selection process. The blog in question -- Red Sox nation's Sons of Sam Horn, a username-required site that's been touted for its intellectual baseball discussion by Curt Schilling and a handful of other former Sox players -- started a thread calling for Lastings to land in St. Louis over the All-Star break.

The response has been overwhelming, at least in the buzz it's created. Yahoo!'s Big League Stew ran with the story as a prominent post, Chris Needham from NBC Washington has been pushing the idea as a way to shame the franchise, and even Mets fans like Matthew Cerrone have warmed to the idea.

Add it all together, and what started as a joke feels like it's getting dangerously close to critical mass (or perhaps critical Mass., if you're in a punny mood). Whether or not Red Sox Nation and its comedically influenced friends can pull off electing a joke outfielder is one question. What it would do to Major League Baseball is another.

Would Commissioner Bud Selig insist on maintaining fan voting if Lastings Milledge was actually elected to an All-Star team? Would he install some kind of a cop out ruling claiming that a player can only be elected if he spends a majority of the season's first half on a Major League roster? Will Lastings Milledge actually get the joke if he is elected? What do people think?

First, Ted Striker?

Second, how wrong he is. This injury is a galvanizing moment for the Casting Lastings movement. It has strengthened our resolve.

People just don't understand.

We're not doing it to MOCK Thrilledge, or the Natinals; We're doing it because we love them. Like a mother who enters her kid into the talent show, when all he's good at is picking boogers and eating them.

As an actual Nationals fan (but a fake Lastings Milledge fan), I'm disappointed with my fellow NatsTowners. Their support would have helped (at least in the "every little bit counts" sort of way). I hope we get a better reception from the equally large Syracuse Chiefs' fan base.

That's right, I'm a self-hating NatsTowner.

25 more.

NatsTwn!

What if Manny and Thrilledge both get elected? What will Bud do?
